BANGOR, Maine — The University of Maine at Presque Isle softball team now owns a 10-8 record after splitting a doubleheader Wednesday against the Husson Eagles (12-9) at Boucher Field on the Husson University campus.
The teams have met four times in a span of four days. The Owls had lost both games in a twinbill at Husson Saturday.
In Wednesday’s game two victory, UMPI needed extra innings to sneak away with a 7-6 triumph. Sara Packard scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Brianna Losee in the top of the eighth and then Packard set down the Eagles in order in the bottom of the inning to clinch the come-from-behind win.
Husson led 6-0 after three innings but UMPI notched a single run in the fourth and then rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh to force extras. As part of the five-run outburst, Emily Page and Jordi Legassie each slammed two-run doubles before Roni Shaw scored on a delayed steal of home to knot the score.
Legassie contributed two hits to lead the Owls at the plate, while Bri Brochu, Madelyn Fowler and Kendra Wilson were all repeat hitters for the Eagles.
Packard went five innings and Brookelynn Garcia pitched the other three for UMPI. Garcia didn’t allow a run during her stint and the Owl hurlers walked only one batter each.
Husson’s Jen Jones struck out 11 batters while pitching the entire game.
In game one, Jones was much more effective as she shut out the Owls on five hits. Husson won the game 2-0.
UMPI threatened with multiple baserunners in the first, fourth and seventh innings, but Jones pitched out of trouble on all three occasions.
Anaiz Diaz, Melanee Terry, Page, Legassie and Losee each hit safely for the Owls.
Packard scattered six hits, but suffered the pitching loss. She surrendered single runs in the second and fourth innings. Morgan Coleman scored a run and knocked in another for the Eagles. She and Brochu each had a pair of hits for the winners.
Jones struck out seven batters, while Packard fanned two. Neither pitcher allowed a walk.
UMPI faces a busy slate in the upcoming days, with doubleheaders scheduled Friday at Southern Maine Community College, Saturday at Fisher College in Brighton, Massachusetts, and Sunday at Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay.
