Repair work — B.O. Noyes, the jeweler, is having some general repairs made on his house, including papering and painting.
New barn — Del Clark has recently built a barn in southeast Caribou. The new building is 42-by-46 feet in size.
100 Years Ago – Apr. 24, 1918
Furlough — Nelson J. Drake, who is serving in the United States Navy, is enjoying a 30-day furlough. He arrived in Caribou on April 16 to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Drake, after having stopped over in Bangor to visit his aunt, Mrs. D.B. Lora, and another aunt, Mrs. W.R. Bowles of South Brewer.
75 Years Ago – Apr. 21, 1943
New editor — Samuel W. Collins Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. S.W. Collins of Collins Street, a junior at the University of Maine, has been named editor-in-chief of The Campus, a student weekly newspaper, in the annual staff elections held this week.
Chinese missionary to speak — Ellen Peterson, missionary, will speak on her experiences in China at the Universalist Church next Friday at 7:30 p.m. Miss Peterson, who was born in New Sweden, went to China in 1913. During 10 of 30 years of evangelistic work there, she was principal of Union Girls School at Hangehow. After graduating from Caribou High School in 1903, Miss Peterson went to Colby College. She graduated there in 1907.
50 Years Ago – Apr. 24, 1968
Ammunition taken — Approximately 800 rounds of ammunition have been recovered by Caribou police following a nighttime break and entry at the Caribou Surplus Store on Water Street. in which a total of 1,000 rounds of .22-caliber shot were taken. Two rolls of dimes were also discovered missing. Police said entry was made by forcing a cellar window on the side of the building, the proceeding upstairs to the store.
Golf course — The long-talked-of 18-hole, $342,000 golf course and clubhouse in Caribou moved a solid step nearer to reality this week as membership in the Northern Aroostook Recreation Center finally totalled 223 persons. Officials of the recreation project are hopeful that approval may be received in as little as 60 days so that development can be commenced this summer. If the approval date is early, they see golfing in Caribou in 1969.
25 Years Ago – Apr. 21, 1993
Transfer — Officials at Agway Inc. announced Monday that the P.L. Willey Co. of Caribou will become an Agway franchise representative, handling the cooperative’s farm and consumer product line. The transfer will take effect May 1, said Barrett Willey, co-owner of P.L. Willey, which will continue to operate the Agway retail store at its current location on Access Highway for the spring and summer. Plans are underway to move the Agway product lines as part of an expansion at Willey’s off Van Buren Road by the end of 1993.
Award recipient — Roy Doak of Caribou was presented the Reginald Bernard Patriotism Award at the Monday, April 19 Patriots Day Banquet at Caribou High School. The award was established in 1992 in honor of Reginald Bernard. Doak was among five award nominees. A World War II U.S. Army veteran, Doak served as the 1966-67 American Legion commander and also has served on various committees during his 48 years of continuous membership.
