100 Years Ago – April 17, 1918

    Accepted Miss Josie Callahan has been accepted by the American Red Cross for nursing duties and will leave Houlton May 1, for headquarters preparatory to going overseas.

    Patriots Day The Public Safety Committee of Maine, through R. W. Shaw, County chairman in food conservation, is asking every town and community in The County to celebrate Patriots Day, Friday, the 19th, and letters and papers have been sent to committees in every town in the county, and all good citizens are urged to assist in celebrating the day in a patriotic manner.

75 Years Ago – April 22, 1943

    Birthday Mrs. Clementine Haley was complimented on her 91st birthday anniversary on Friday, April 17, when a family dinner party was held at her home on Highland Ave. in honor of the occasion. Mrs. Haley received many cards of congratulation, flowers and many gifts from relatives and friends.

    Get flag Bridgewater Classical Academy has received the Minute Man Flag. In order to be eligible for this flag at least 90 percent of the students must regularly buy War Savings stamps. BCA is the fourth school to have the honor of displaying this Schools-at-War Flag.

50 Years Ago – April 17, 1968

    New manager John B. Janson, a native of Biddeford, has been named manager of the J.C. Penney Company store. Mr. Janson attended Biddeford schools and Gorham State Teachers College. He is a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Janson has commented that he is very impressed with the community, enjoys the people and looks forward to living in Houlton.

    Library contract Mr. Ludwig said that eight general contractors from Maine and Massachusetts had bid on the construction of the addition to the Cary Library and has been awarded to  A.R. Kenney and Sons of Bangor. The low bid of $142,650 by A.R. Kenney and Sons was accepted, and the contractor has been authorized to proceed at once with construction.

25 Years Ago – April 21, 1993

   Tops for charity Members of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls helped to raise money for the Shriners Hospitals with 100,000 soda tabs that they helped to collect. Members helping to collect; Anitra Ford, Amanda Hughes, Roxanne Porter, Lesley MacLean Andrea Gilliss, and Shannon Fitzpatrick.

   Award winner — Clay A. Merritt, son of Amy Merritt of Houlton and Donald Ross Jr. of Pueblo, Col. has been named a United States National Award winner in foreign language. He is a student of Houlton High School. He was nominated for this National Award by Debra Beaton a Spanish teacher and will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook, published nationally.
