CARIBOU, Maine — Sleet, freezing rain and strong overnight wind gusts resulted in multiple power outages in Aroostook and Washington counties Monday.
According to Judy Long of Emera Maine, 1,347 customers in Aroostook County and 889 customers in Washington County were affected.
Long said Tuesday that the bulk of the customers affected in Aroostook County were in the Caribou area.
“At about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, approximately 1,350 customers in the area of Caribou and New Sweden lost power after a tree fell on a line,” Long said. “We were able to restore service around 4:15 a.m.”
Tony Mignone, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Caribou, said Tuesday morning there were some isolated reports of windy conditions.
“We had some pretty strong southeast winds last night, with gusts of about 30 miles per hour,” Mignone said. “I expect there were probably some gusts higher than that in other areas that are more open, but even then they were not overly strong.”
By Tuesday morning, the freezing rain had moved out of Aroostook, according to Mignone, but there remained a chance for a few lingering showers and that fell on much of Aroostook County Monday had left the area, but there remained a chance for a few rain showers and possibly an isolated snow shower Tuesday evening.
