Debate continues over House District 7 winner

Election Day has come and gone, but debate continues over the winner in House District 7.

The House Elections Committee met Dec. 15 to consider the disputed race between Democratic challenger Patricia Sutherland, of Chapman, and Republican incumbent John Churchill, of Washburn. Following the November election, Sutherland appeared to have a four-vote lead over Churchill. Being such a close race, a recount was requested. That recount has been performed and, once again, Sutherland appeared to be the winner.

“The apparent winner was provisionally seated according to protocol — Pat Sutherland — until the matter is resolved. Because the recount was contested, the matter will go to the Legislature’s Elections Committee for review, where they will investigate and could interview participants, like city clerks and election workers, before making a recommendation,” said Kaylene Waindle, communications director for the Maine State House Majority Office.

Churchill is reportedly contesting the outcome. House Speaker Glenn Cummings has appointed a committee made up of four Republicans and four Democrats to determine the winner and make a recommendation to the House for a vote. To date, there is no word on that committee’s decision in the matter.

“I would expect the final determination will be made before the legislature reconvenes for the full session on Jan. 3,” said Waindle.
