Friday quiet, Saturday busy for local squads

After the deluge of rain that fell on Aroostook County Thursday, many athletic fields are in no condition to hold baseball or softball games.

However, at least one field, Hodgdon’s baseball diamond, is in good enough shape to host not one, but two games Friday. Katahdin travels to face the Hawks at 4 p.m. and after the conclusion of that game, Southern Aroostook will play Greater Houlton Christian Academy, starting at about 6 p.m.

The Caribou girls and boys tennis teams will host John Bapst Friday afternoon beginning at 3:30 p.m. The match was originally set for Saturday, but a rainy forecast has caused that match to be moved up a day.

Washburn was supposed to play its home openers in baseball and softball Friday afternoon, but poor field conditions have forced the games against Madawaska to be rescheduled.

The games will now be played as part of doubleheaders on May 30. The Beavers will host the Owls for the two games beginning at 3 p.m.

East Grand was slated to host Wisdom Friday in baseball and softball, but the Vikings fields are too wet to play. Those games will now be played Monday, May 21, at 3 p.m.

The Shire boys and girls tennis teams are scheduled to travel to Millinocket Friday afternoon to take on the combined squad of Stearns/Schenck starting at 4 p.m.

If the weather holds up, several local teams will be in action Saturday. Presque Isle’s baseball and softball teams make the trip to East Machias to take on Washington Academy in a doubleheader that starts at noon. The Caribou baseball and softball teams will play at Mount Desert Island in doubleheaders beginning at 1 p.m.

Some makeup contests also are planned. Fort Fairfield will take on Southern Aroostook at a neutral site, on Lee Academy’s fields, in both baseball and softball. The games begin at 1 p.m. Central Aroostook plays a doubleheader at Woodland in both baseball and softball, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.

The Ashland baseball team’s game against Greater Houlton Christian Academy in Hodgdon has been moved to May 25. It will now be played as part of a doubleheader in Ashland beginning at 3 p.m.

The Presque Isle tennis teams home courts at the University of Maine at Presque Isle are still not playable, so their scheduled home match against Hermon will now be hosted by the Hawks Saturday at noon.

Track and field meets are still on for Saturday as planned. Houlton, GHCA, Caribou, Fort Fairfield, Washburn and Hodgdon will be at Foxcroft Academy in Dover-Foxcroft, while Presque Isle is at Mount Desert Island. Both meets have noon start times.
