Track athletes perform well in first time out

Last weekend’s track and field meets marked the first time on a track for Aroostook County squads, but there were still some strong individual efforts turned in by many local athletes.

On April 20, Presque Isle and Fort Fairfield competed in a meet held at Hampden Academy.

Top girls’ efforts included first place in the 1,600-meter racewalk by Wildcat Kamryn Gilmour, a first in the javelin and a third in the shot put by PI’s Madelyn Wing; a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash, 300 hurdles and high jump by PI’s Libby Moreau; a second by Fort Fairfield’s Jessica Halsey in the 400-meter dash; a second and a third by Wildcats Madison Jandreau and Isabelle Jackson respectively in the 1,600-meter run; a second in the 3,200 by Jandreau; a third by PI’s Alexandra Walsh in the discus; a fourth in the 100 hurdles by Wildcat freshman Delaney Alward; a fourth in the 300 hurdles by PI’s Maggie Castonguay; a fourth in the 800 by PI’s Jackson; a fourth in the 200 by Fort Fairfield’s Annika Reynolds; a fourth in the high jump by the Tigers’ Amber Sherwood; and a fourth in the shot put by PI’s Elise Nelson.

Presque Isle’s 4×400 relay team, consisting of Castonguay, Kate Goulet, Janelle Doak and Emma Shearer, placed second.

The Wildcats placed third out of seven teams with 116 points and the Tigers were fifth with 53.

For the boys, Fort Fairfield teammates Jonah Daigle, Colin Goshorn and Justin Maynard were first, second and fourth, respectively, in the 110-meter hurdles. Trace Cyr of Presque Isle came in second in the 400, third in the 100 and fourth in the shot put; and teammate Max Bartley was fourth in both the 1,600 and the 3,200.

Daigle won the 300 hurdles, with PI’s Connor Michaud placing second and Goshorn ending up third. Daigle took second in the long jump and Soloman Daigle was third in the shot put. Goshorn was the runner-up in the pole vault.

The Wildcats’ 4×400 relay team of Kyler Caron, Drew Cameron, William Bridges and Cyr took the top position. The 4×800 relay team of Gage LeTourneau, Bridges, Connor Junkins and Bartley placed second; and the 4×100 relay team, consisting of Cameron Lahey, Drew Cameron, Colby Carlisle and Ben Ryan, took third.

Fort Fairfield came in fourth as a team with 68 points and Presque Isle was fifth with 66. Eight teams participated.

Caribou was in a meet held at Brewer April 19. Placing among the top four for the girls in individual events were JoJo Fields and Willow Whitten, who were third and fourth, respectively, in the 100-meter hurdles; Anya O’Meara, first in the 1,600 racewalk; Alexis Rodriguez, first in the 1,600 and second in the high jump; Ashley Violette, first in the 3,200 and third in the 1,600; Meagan Dube, second in the 200 and third in the 400; Whitten, second in the 300 hurdles and fourth in the pole vault; Paige Espling, first in the high jump and fourth in the 300 hurdles; Maren Moir, fourth in the 800; Monica McLaughlin, first in the javelin and third in the triple jump; and Hope Shea, third in the javelin.

Edie Shea, Moir, Violette and Rodriguez were members of the 4×800 relay team which captured first place. Runners-up in the 4×400 were the Vikings’ Whitten, Moir, Dube and Rodriguez, while taking fourth in the 4×100 were Caribou’s Jessica Limary, Hope Shea, Dube and Fields.

Caribou placed second overall with 155 points, 16 behind Brewer in the seven-team meet.

On the boys’ side, those making the top four from Caribou were: Evan Desmond, first in the 1,600 racewalk, second in the 800 and third in the 1,600; Cory Jandreau, first in both the 400 and the pole vault; Isaac Marker, second in the 400 and third in the high jump; Caleb Libby, third in the 300 hurdles; Dylan Marrero, second in the 3,200, third in the long jump and fourth in the 1,600; Martin Heald, second in the 1,600 racewalk; Dalton Kleinert, third in the javelin;Tom Pinette, fourth in both the 1,600 racewalk and the 800; Apollo Grondin, third in the 110 hurdles and fourth in the 300 hurdles; and Kyle Boucher, fourth in the 3,200.

The Vikings’ 4×800 relay team of Jordan Duplessie, Aaron Macek, Malachai Willey and Calvin Mokler came in third place; the 4×400 team of Jandreau, Pinette, Marker and Desmond took third; and the 4×100 team of Grondin, Liam McMillon, Chandler Bell and Daniel Lister also was third.

Caribou scored 149 points to take first place out of seven teams.
