Library to dedicate new room to Porter

WASHBURN, Maine — Spring is finally making its way to The County and Washburn Memorial Library Board Members will celebrate with a spring gathering on Monday, May 7, from 4 to 7 p.m.

The celebration will include the dedication of the library’s meeting room, completed thanks to grant funding. The room will be dedicated in honor of longtime librarian Barbara Porter, who served from 1981 to 2000. Dedication ceremonies will begin at 6:30 p.m. downstairs.

The public is welcome to attend and meet Porter, along with library board members and current librarian Lois Walker, and to enjoy refreshments downstairs and sign up to win a bundle of books.

Entryways are located in back of the building, which enters into the downstairs meeting room, and upstairs, which opens into the main section.

Library officials said the building will undergo a facelift as soon as the snow is gone, thanks to another grant. Workers will install a new ramp, which will be ADA compliant, and new concrete steps with handrails and a sidewalk.

The board recently decided to eliminate all fines on books. In the past, they have accepted food donations for fines, and the library will continue to keep this box available to provide donations to a food pantry.

Among the facility’s technological features are a cloud library, which allows patrons to download ebooks and audiobooks, and MARVEL, a statewide virtual reference library.

The community can continue to keep up with changes and events by going to the WPL’s new website, www.washburnlibrary.com, which among other features will enable card catalog searches.
