115 Years Ago – May 12, 1903
Boat house — A boat house large enough to accommodate nine canoes has been built at the dam this week and much sport is anticipated this summer by owners of canoes.
Comedy Company — The Boston Comedy Company with that old-time favorite, H. Price Webber as manager, will be in Caribou for one night only, Friday, May 29 with the powerful drama in four acts, “Tempted Tried and True.”
100 Years Ago – May 15, 1918
Gardens planted — Several gardens have been planted during the past week. Planting has been carried on with much difficulty due to so much rain.
Baseball — At a game of baseball at the park Wednesday, the high school team defeated the Lime stone team by a score of 17 to 10.
75 Years Ago – May 12, 1943
Victory Restaurant opened — The Victory Restaurant opened on Tuesday in the location formerly occupied by Automotive Supply Company on Sweden Street. Edward Corey and Sam Sullivan are the proprietors. The new restaurant, which has six double booths, three tables and 16 counter seats, will serve light lunches and full course meals. The restaurant is open from early morning until midnight.
Brush fires — Not since 1934 has Maine’s loss from grass and brush fires has been as heavy as this year, declared Raymond E. Rendall, state forest commissioner, yesterday in commenting on the necessity of everyone taking every precaution to cut down this great loss.
50 Years Ago – May 15, 1968
State of the art — A newly installed bright-image X-ray system, valued in excess of $90,000 together with various ancillary devices, will provide Cary Memorial Hospital with the most advanced capabilities for today’s rapidly expanding X-ray technology. This week was also the advent of National Hospital Week with the acceptance of a K-Thermia Unit, a blanket designed to keep a patient’s temperature at any desired level, and Birth-Eez, a “plastic bubble” useful in obstetrics.
Six new teachers — Six new teachers will join the local school system in the fall as a result of elections held by the Caribou School Committee. They are Betty Martin, Sandra Munn, Ronald Duprey, David Heald, Sally Bell and Norma Perry. The committee also approved the excuse of Mrs. Eileen Pinette from the last three weeks of school so she can attend a special program at the Aroostook State College this summer.
25 Years Ago – May 12, 1993
Fuel farm — The Caribou City Council Monday evening during a public hearing accepted the recommendation of the planning board and approved an amendment to the zoning laws which clears the way for Daigle Oil Company to plan for construction of a petroleum storage facility on U.S. Route 1, south of the Caribou Motor Inn. The bulk storage plant would consist of six 20,000 gallon underground tanks and a loading rack. The tanks would be used to store fuel oil, diesel oil, kerosene and gasoline. The council also approved a resolution endorsing the concept of the proposed merger of Cary Medical Center and TAMC.
Feeling good — Students at the Caribou Middle School have a good feeling about themselves and their school, according to a recent survey. Sherill Gardner, a teacher at the middle school, reviewed the results of a self-esteem survey developed by grade 8 pupils to the Caribou Board of Education Wednesday night. The survey was part of Gardner’s work for a master’s degree in education at the University of Maine at Orono.
