100 Years Ago – May 8, 1918
Farewell gift — Howard D. McIlroy, who retired on May 1 from the U. S. postal service after 15 years as a city carrier, was presented by his fellow employees on Tuesday last with a splendid leather traveling bag, a gift that was very much appreciated.
Presentation — On Friday evening, May 3, the employees of the Houlton Water Co. and a few friends gathered at the office of the company to bid one of their valued employees, Mr. David Shanks, farewell, as he had tendered his resignation to enter a business for himself. The evening was pleasantly spent with music, refreshments and a presentation.
75 Years Ago – May 13, 1943
Retiring — John L. Polleys, deputy collector of Customs here for the past 13 years, will retire from active service July 1. When he leaves the Customs Service, Mr. Polleys will do so after almost 31 years of continuous active duty, all of which time has been spent in Aroostook and Washington counties. He has been stationed at Houlton since November 1930, and since his residency here has been active in local clubs and lodges. He expects to continue to make Houlton his home after his retirement.
Raising money — Mrs. Charles Noyes, chairman for Southern Aroostook Division of the Women’s Field Army for Cancer Control, has announced the sum of $544.45 for the South Aroostook Division with two towns unreported. Houlton contributed the sum of $362.57. Mrs. Joseph Hatch was town captain.
50 Years Ago – May 8, 1968
The winner — John Cumming took over the driver’s seat of the riding mower that he won as a door prize at Fogg’s warehouse open house, held April 25-26, and made ready to take on this year’s crop of grass.
Present checks — Returns from the annual Charity Ball came to a total of $2,400. The amount represents the income from the sale of tickets and donations for the ball which is jointly sponsored by the Aroostook Hospital Free Bed and Aid and Madigan Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. There to present and receive the checks of $1,200 for each hospital were: Mrs. Hudson Berce, Free Bed and Aid; Miss Helen Turney, RN, superintendent of the Aroostook Hospital; Wesley Willigar, general chairman of the ball; Sister Corinne, administrator, Madigan Hospital; and Mrs. Ray Brown.
25 Years Ago – May 12, 1993
Membership tea — The Houlton Regional Hospital Auxiliary made plans to hold its annual membership tea on Saturday, May 15. This year the tea was to be hosted by Mrs. June Fitzpatrick on Lake Road in New Limerick.
Welcome — The Aroostook County Action Program welcomed Leslie Gartley, a registered nurse practitioner, to the recently relocated Family Planning clinic in Houlton. Gartley will be providing the medical component of services at the clinic. Gartley came to ACAP with 15 years of experience in obstetrical nursing in Arizona and four years inn OB/GYN at the Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle.
