Varsity sports results from busy weekend

It was an active weekend of varsity sports contests for baseball, softball and tennis squads.

That heavy schedule continues Monday with a bundle of games slated. In baseball and softball, Houlton is at Lee Academy, Katahdin plays at Fort Fairfield, Washburn makes the trip to Fort Kent, Southern Aroostook travels to Ashland. Greater Houlton Christian Academy’s baseball team plays at Hodgdon. All of those games feature 4 p.m. start times.

Houlton’s game versus Orono was postponed Saturday due to heavy rain that fell late Friday evening. Those games will now be played Monday, May 28. Ashland’s home games on Friday against Wisdom were moved to Tuesday, May 22.

The following is a recap of games played Friday and Saturday.

Baseball

Central Aroostook 14, Hodgdon 4 — At Mars Hill Friday, Colby Kingsbury pitched five innings and offensively he provided two hits as Central Aroostook beat Hodgdon. Caleb Harris also singled twice for the Panthers (2-2).

Losing pitcher Elijah Matheson hit two singles to lead Hodgdon (2-3).

East Grand 15, Washburn 5 — At Washburn Friday, the Vikings rode the pitching of Thomas Gilman and the hitting of Trevor Noyes and Matthew Potter to victory over Washburn. Joshua Jackson led Washburn at the plate.

East Grand is now 1-2 while Washburn is 0-2.

Fort Kent 15, Fort Fairfield 5 — The Warriors picked up their first victory of the season Friday by a lopsided score over the Tigers in Fort Fairfield. Fort Kent improved to 1-1.

Central Aroostook 6, Fort Fairfield 3 — In the makeup game played Saturday in Mars Hill, Ben Thomas struck out 10 Tiger batters and Caleb Harris paced the offense with three singles as the Panthers came out on top thanks to a four-run sixth inning.

Brayden Bradbury doubled for the winners, who improved to 3-2. Malcolm Langner and losing pitcher Isaac Cyr had a hit each for the Tigers, whose record evened at 2-2.

Southern Aroostook 8, Madawaska 3 / Southern Aroostook 13, Madawaska 2  — At Madawaska Saturday, the Warriors of Dyer Brook picked up a pair of victories. Individual results were not reported.

Ellsworth 6, Presque Isle 0 / Ellsworth 12, Presque Isle 0 — The Eagles swept the doubleheader played Saturday in Ellsworth. The Wildcat offense was unable to manage a run in either game and collected a total of four hits in the two games.

R.J. Gross doubled in the first game and singled in the second one to lead Presque Isle at the plate. He suffered the pitching loss in the nightcap, while Jonah Hudson allowed only two earned runs over five inning but still took the loss in the opener.

Caribou 4, John Bapst 2 / John Bapst 9, Caribou 3 — The Vikings managed a split in the twinbill played Saturday at Caribou High School. Individual results were not reported.

Softball

Central Aroostook 21, Hodgdon 9 — At Mars Hill Friday, Central Aroostook broke the game open at the bottom of the sixth inning by scoring 12 runs. Macey Coffin led the Panthers with four singles while Caitlyn Harris and Libby Grass each hit three singles and Annika Nicholas hit a double and a triple.

Harris struck out nine inside the pitching circle for the Panthers.

Kora Lambert hit a double and a triple for Hodgdon, while Sidney Crane hit two doubles.

Fort Kent 16, Fort Fairfield 0 — Macey Thibodeau fired a two-hitter for the Warriors, while Tiger pitchers combined for 11 walks and allowed nine hits as Fort Kent won easily Friday in Fort Fairfield.

The game was halted after five innings due to the run rule. The Warriors are now 2-1 following the victory.

East Grand 12, Washburn 0 — At Washburn Friday, the Vikings shutout Washburn. Individual results were not reported.

Southern Aroostook 10, Katahdin 0 — At Dyer Brook Friday,  Southern Aroostook hurler Kylie Vining struck out 11 Katahdin batters, setting the tone for a 10-run win over the Cougars. For the Warriors, Makaylen Porter delivered a triple and a single; Vining added a double and two singles; and Alexis Hartin had two doubles and a single.

For the Cougars, pitcher Lily Cullen struck out four, while team members Leanne Fitzpatrick, Danielle Libby, Jordyn Gardner, and Erin lake all contributed singles.

Ellsworth 17, Presque Isle 5 / Presque Isle 16, Ellsworth 9 — The Wildcats salvaged a split in their home doubleheader Saturday as junior pitcher Sydney Thompson got the win and aided her own cause at the plate with a pair of home runs.

Rebecca Rider went 3 for 4 and Emma Bouchard contributed two hits for Presque Isle.

Ellsworth won the first game behind Katie Bagley, who had four hits, and Sara Shea, who notched three. Savannah Rodriguez had three hits, scored two runs and drove in two for PI. Rider homered and singled twice.

Presque Isle is now 2-3 and Ellsworth holds a 3-3 mark.

John Bapst 18, Caribou 1 / Caribou 6, John Bapst 5 — On Saturday in Caribou, the Vikings took the second game by scoring twice in the bottom of the eighth inning thanks to Alexis Parker, who smacked a two-run double to plate the tying and winning runs.

Caribou led 4-3 before Kayla Massey of the Crusaders cranked a solo homer to tie it. Hallie Rockcress hit an RBI double for John Bapst in the top of the eighth before Parker provided the heroics in the bottom of the inning. Jaelynn Doody had three hits to lead the Vikings at the plate and Brooke Moir was the winning pitcher.

Massey dominated on the mound in the first game, striking out 10 and surrendering only four hits, as Bapst prevailed. The Crusaders are now 2-3, while the Vikings hold a 2-6 record.

Central Aroostook 7, Fort Fairfield 4 — On Saturday in Mars Hill, Caitlyn Harris struck out 14 Tiger batters as the Panthers won its second straight game after opening with three losses.

Maci Beals rapped three singles, while Harris, Breann Bradbury and Isabelle Wright collected two singles each for the Panthers.

Sara Edgecomb struck out nine for 0-3 Fort Fairfield. Makaila Beck doubled and single twice to lead the Tigers’ offense.

Southern Aroostook 13, Madawaska 5 / Southern Aroostook 7, Madawaska 6 — At Madawaska Saturday, the Warriors added two more victories to their record with wins over Madawaska. Individual results were not reported.

Tennis

Van Buren boys 3, Houlton 2  — At Van Buren Friday, the individual results, with Houlton players listed first were: in singles, Nolan Porter lost to Brandon Sytulek, 2-8; Tim Youngfellow was beaten by Brenton Soucy, 6-8; and Devin Ivey lost to Luc Perreault 2-8.

In doubles, Isaac Vega and Jaron Gentle beat Skylar Paradis and Colby Lapointe 8-2; and Nolan Jacobs and Nate Deluca bested Deacon Thivierge and Eddie Saucier, 8-2.

Houlton girls 4, Van Buren 1 — At Van Buren Friday, the individual results, with Shires listed first, were: in singles, Becca Mooers beat Tiffany Morrow, 8-4; Sydney Lorom bested Erica Ouellette, 8-2; and Maddie Grant defeated Emma LaJoie, 8-0.

In doubles, Grace Johnson and Emily Miller lost to Sierra Soucy-Emilia Nicknair, 3-8; and Reagan Perfitt and Morgan Graham won by forfeit.

Caribou girls 5, Mount Desert Island 0 — The Vikings are a perfect 6-0 after easily handling MDI at home Saturday. Caribou gave up only two games during the afternoon.

In singles, Gabrielle Marquis beat Ellie Bridges, 8-1; Ashley Matlock blanked Emily Banks, 8-0; and Hailey Holmquist blitzed Maggie Collins, 8-1.

The doubles team of Ciara Richards and Madison Stratton eased past Rachelle Swanson and Kate Hoff, 8-0; while Samantha Tourk and Kyra Thibeault won by the same score over Isabella Michael and Claire Shaw.

Caribou boys 5, Mount Desert Island 0 — Alec Cyr defeated Gabe Michael in a tough match in No. 2 singles, but Caribou won its other four matches with ease to move to 6-0 in the victory over MDI played in Caribou Saturday.

Cyr downed Michael by an 8-6 score, while Parker Deprey won by default over Drake Jones and Gabriel Rand ousted Max Craigo, 8-1, in the other singles matches. In doubles, Bailey Griffeth and Sawyer Deprey stopped Nolan Murphy and Michael Berge, 8-0, while Emerson Duplissie-Cyr and Seth Beidelman defeated Lanven Estacia and Kevin Waldron, 8-1.

Presque Isle boys 4, John Bapst 1 — The Wildcats raised their record to 4-1 by beating John Bapst in a match played Saturday at the Armstrong Tennis Center in Bangor.

Andre Daigle shut out Duncan Waanders in first singles, 8-0, while Mason Young beat Cannon Breen, 8-1, and Jordan Bonville prevailed over Chris Chapelle, 8-2.

Isaac Madore and Gage Young bested Jason Wei and Aiden Close in first doubles, while the Crusaders’  lone victory came in second doubles as Sam Slavin and Madryn Evans-Mason edged Austin Moreau and Elijah Russell, 8-6.

John Bapst girls 5, Presque Isle 0 — The Crusaders improved to 5-1 by winning easily over the Wildcats at the Armstrong Tennis Center in Bangor Saturday.

Crystal Bell defeated Hana Boucher, 8-0, while Becca Johnson stopped Miranda Bragan and Harper Averitt defeated Anna Robinson by identical scores of 8-1 in the other singles matches.

Presque Isle forfeited in second doubles, while the Crusaders’ Lisa Murphy and Grace Philippon ousted the Wildcats’ Gaby Haley and Jenna Ouellette in No. 1 doubles, 8-1.
