PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The season ended Tuesday for the University of Maine at Presque Isle softball team.
The Owls, coached by Sara Shaw, fell to Penn State-Schuylkill, 5-2, in an elimination game at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Small College World Series played in Dubois, Pennsylvania.
The Nittany Lions scored a pair of runs in the top of the first before UMPI tied the game in the second. With Roni Shaw on third base, Sara Packard delivered a sacrifice fly for the first Owl run. Later in the inning, Brianna Losee’s sacrifice bunt brought home Emily Page for the second run.
Penn State-Schyuylkill pitcher Hannah Sell blanked the Owls the rest of the way. She finished with a complete-game six-hitter.
Packard struck out four batters during her 4-1/3 innings of work for UMPI. she allowed three earned runs on nine hits while walking two. Marissa Reagle went the final 1-2/3 innings and did not allow a run.
Jordi Legassie, Melanee Terry, Alexis Allcock, Shaw, Losee and Nicole Marucci each singled for UMPI, which finished the season with a 25-13 overall record.
On Monday, the Owls were sent to the loser’s bracket as Carlow University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, registered an 8-0 shutout victory.
UMPI was held to only one hit, a fourth-inning single off the bat of Legassie. Packard did the pitching and allowed 13 hits and five earned runs. She struck out two batters and walked four.
Carlow’s Abby Stroud fanned five batters in her five innings of work to earn the win in the circle. The game was called after five due to the run rule.
