GHCA announces honor parts

HOULTON, Maine — Tom Zimmerman, Head of School for Greater Houlton Christian Academy, announced Wednesday the honor parts for the graduating Class of 2018.

Grace Graham has been named valedictorian, while Bridget Hill was tabbed as salutatorian and Alex Walker is first honor essayist.

Graham is the daughter of Montie and Sarah Graham of Cary. She is a member of the National Honor Society. As a leader, she has served her graduating class well, organizing various fundraising activities and working on the yearbook, Zimmerman said.

Graham has earned many academic awards as well as gold and silver Presidential Education Awards. She has received recognition by the Houlton Rotary Club and merited ACSI Distinguished Christian High School Student in academics. She participated in 3 years of varsity cross country, finishing two years as the Aroostook League Cross Country Champion and Maine State Cross Country Top Ten in 2017.

Graham also participated in two years of varsity softball and track and field and one year of varsity basketball and was recognized as an Aroostook League Scholar Athlete for 2018. In her community, Graham is a part of the high school charity group and willingly serves at many school fundraisers.

Currently, Graham is employed at Hannaford. She will attend the University of Maine at Orono, where she will pursue a degree in accounting.

Hill is daughter of Cary and Terri Hill of Houlton. She has received several academic and character awards including the Christian service award. For her consistent hard work she has been recognized by the Houlton Rotary Club, received numerous awards, including Presidential Awards and was chosen for the ACSI Distinguished Christian High School Student award for Christian Service.

Athletically, Hill has participated in cross country, track and field and intramural volleyball and has been a student of the Houlton School of Dance since the age of 4. Hill was the recipient of the Maine Principal’s Association Principal’s Award for 2018.

She attends Military Street Baptist Church. She has a heart for others, according to Zimmerman, and loves to serve her community as demonstrated by her leadership role in the high school service group for the past three years. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family, working on the family farm, and horseback riding. Hill plans to attend Gordon College, where she will pursue a degree in social work/international affairs .

Walker is the son of Allan Walker of Hartland, New Brunswick and Angela Shea of Somerville, New Brunswick. He has received numerous academic awards throughout his high school career, the Christian Service Award, ACSI Distinguished Christian High School Student, and Houlton Rotary Club Recognition. He has been a member of the National Honor Society. Athletically, Walker participated in cross country and volleyball.

He is active in his community, where he has been a lifeguard and swimming lesson instructor. He attends the Centreville Baptist Church where he participates in the worship team and youth ministry. He has also volunteered his time to benefit others through his involvement in the high school charity group and his Christian service work at Military Street Baptist Church.

Walker is well-rounded individual who excels not only at academics, but also in the fine arts, Zimmerman said. He plays the drums, piano and ukulele and also enjoys singing and acting. He has participated in the Carleton County Music Festival and The Lion King, Jr. sponsored by the Mill Pond Afterschool Program.

He will attend Trinity Western University in British Columbia, Canada, pursuing a degree in arts, media and culture, majoring in film studies.
