Caribou tennis squads remain perfect

The tennis regular season comes to an official close this week and the playoffs begin a week from Tuesday, while the softball and baseball regular season finishes up at the end of the month. Local teams are getting in their final matches and games in with hopes of reaching the postseason.

Monday’s slate of games features Fort Kent baseball/softball at Central Aroostook at 2 p.m.; Wisdom baseball/softball at East Grand, 3 p.m.; Hodgdon baseball/softball at Southern Aroostook, 3:30 p.m.; Ashland baseball/softball at Washburn, 4 p.m.; and Fort Fairfield softball at Madawaska at 4 p.m.

Results from Friday and Saturday games and matches were as follows:

Tennis

Caribou girls (11-0) 5, Old Town (2-7) 0 — At Old Town Friday, the Vikings kept their unbeaten season intact by downing the Coyotes. Singles: Gabrielle Marquis (C) def. Rheylan Burke 8-0, Ashley Matlock (C) def. Megan Grindle 8-2, Hailey Holmquist (C) def. Hope Dorr 8-2; doubles: Madison Stratton-Ciara Richards (C) def. Sage Phillips-Hannah Swedburg 8-0, Samantha Tourk-Sage Dubay (C) def. Kyra Armitage-Izzy Ward 8-0.

Caribou boys (11-0) 5, Old Town (3-6) 0 — The Vikings remained perfect by throttling the Coyotes in a road match. Singles: Parker Deprey (C) def. Caleb Braley 8-0, Gabe Rand (C) def. Jay Theriault 8-2, Bailey Griffeth (C) def. Dillon Leland 8-0; doubles: Sawyer Deprey-Emerson Duplissie-Cyr (C) def. Blake Daigle-Brady Georgia 8-1, Seth Beidelman-Aidan Plante (C)  def. Justin Bishop-Russell Sussong 8-5.

Softball

Fort Fairfield 19, Wisdom 9 — The Tigers defeated the Pioneers for the second time in 10 days, this time winning at St. Agatha. Cammi King-DeMerchant ripped four hits, while Cassidy Coiley and Sarah Edgecomb had three each.

Edgecomb was also the winning pitcher as she struck out eight batters and allowed only one walk. Autumn Roy and Emma Chamberlain had three hits each for Wisdom.

Southern Aroostook 24, Washburn 4 — The Warriors stayed unbeaten and improved their record to 11-0 on the season with the win over Washburn. The Beavers (0-8) remained winless following Friday’s contest in Dyer Brook. Individual results were not reported.

Katahdin 7, Madawaska 6At Madawaska Friday, Lily Cullen struck out eight for Katahdin, while Madawaska pitcher Riley Lausier struck out five.

Cougar Lindsey Drew led off the top of the seventh inning with a triple and scored the eventual game-winning run for Katahdin. Emma McNally had two singles and an RBI, while Cullen, Leanne Fitzpatrick, and Hannah Drew all singles

Katahdin (8-3) retired the final batter with the tying run at third base in the bottom of the seventh with a strikeout.

For Madawaska (3-6), Hannah Nadeau went three for four with two singles, a double and two RBIs. Emily Boucher had a double and Riley Lausier and Jenna Dugal each singled for the Owls.

Foxcroft Academy 12, Caribou 0; Foxcroft Academy 9, Caribou 8 — The Ponies managed a pair of home victories over the Vikings Saturday, mostly due to the pitching of Makenzie Beaudry.

She struck out nine batters in the opener, allowing only a hit to Emily Adler. Beaudry also slammed two doubles and drove in two runs.

Beaudry also started the second game, pitching the first two frames, before coming on in the seventh to earn the save. The Ponies scored the tie-breaking run on an error in the bottom of the sixth.

Kaytlin Waldemarson had three hits and two RBI and Taylor Devoe two hits and two runs scored for Caribou.

Baseball

Fort Fairfield 22, Wisdom 6 — Colby Langner went four innings on the mound and Isaac Cyr pitched the final two in relief as the Tigers (9-2) won at St. Agatha Friday.

Liam McNamee homered, doubled and singled twice to power Fort’s offense. Kobe West added a two-run single and Avery Cormier contributed a pair of singles.

GHCA 12, Washburn 6 — The Eagles doubled up on the Beavers Friday, keeping Washburn winless on the campaign. Individual results were not reported.

Foxcroft Academy 5, Caribou 1; Foxcroft Academy 4, Caribou 3 — The Ponies were able to sweep the Vikings in Dover-Foxcroft Saturday, pushing Caribou’s losing streak to four games entering its finale on May 29 at Presque Isle.

In the opener, starting pitcher Mason Patten pitched well for the Vikings but early control problems allowed Foxcroft to jump out to a three-run lead. Caribou was unable to come up with hits with runners on base in being held to the one run.

The Ponies took the second game on a suicide squeeze bunt in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jake Berkoski started and pitched a gem for Caribou, which took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning. Foxcroft closed to within a run entering the seventh and tied the game with a suicide squeeze before winning it that way three batters later.

Katahdin 19, Madawaska 7 — At Madawaska Friday, the Cougars erupted for 16 runs in the first inning and cruised to the easy win over Madawaska. Brody Guiggey homered for the winners and was also the winning pitcher.

Tristan Cyr homered for Madawaska.

Fort Kent 6, Houlton 5/Houlton 5, Fort Kent 1 — At Fort Kent Saturday, the Shires split with the Warriors. Individual results were not reported.

GHCA 18, Southern Aroostook 17 — At Dyer Brook Saturday, the Eagles improved to 7-2 on the season with the one-run victory over Southern Aroostook. The Warriors fall to 4-7 on the year. Individual results were not reported.
