100 Years Ago – May 22, 1918
Barn dance — The Houlton Motor Co., held a barn dance at their garage on Kendall Street last Wednesday evening, which was largely attended and a good time was enjoyed. Bryson’s orchestra furnished a fine dance program.
Returned home — David Shanks, who has been in Boston for some time on matters connected with the business that he is to open in the Lawlis Building on Kendall street with F. B. Kidder, for the repair, sale and storage of batteries for automobiles, returned home last week and is now making preparations to open up. Mr. Kidder is working in one of the best factories in New England doing general tire repair work and vulcanizing.
75 Years Ago – May 27, 1943
Wins award — John E. Hess of Houlton, son of Mrs. Isabelle Hess, who was a member of the graduating class of Bowdoin College this year, completed a conspicuous record during his college course which was climaxed by his participation in the commencement exercises and his receipt of one of the most coveted awards to a member of the graduating class. He was one of four commencement speakers. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and was one of two to graduate with the magna cum laude rank. In addition he was one of his class who received an all-A rank during 1942-43 school year. The award, presented to Hess by President K. C. M. Sills, was the Lucien Howe prize scholarship for high qualities of gentlemanly conduct and character, one of the highest honors a graduate can earn.
Accepts position — Henry Abbott of Waterboro, who has previously been employed in the job printing department of the Houlton Publishing Company, for short periods of time, has accepted a permanent position. He will replace Mrs. Agnes Shiels who has resigned after many years of association with this company. Mr. and Mrs. Abbott have moved their furniture to Houlton and have taken the upstairs apartment in the Neal Bither house on Heywood street.
50 Years Ago – May 22, 1968
Donation — A transistor radio donated by D.B. TV will be one of many items to be placed on sale at the public auction to be held by the Lions Club Saturday afternoon at the Houlton International Airport. Merlin Holmes and John Berrill of the Lions Club accept the radio from Frank Blackie and Jack Dobbins.
A tea for mothers — The Houlton Colonist Division of Pioneer Girls entertained their mothers and friends at a tea in the Fellowship Hall of the Military Street Baptist Church. The girls presented each mother with a nylon net pot cleaner corsage to be worn for the evening. A devotional thought was given by Mrs. Harold Carpenter, Chief Guide of the Pilgrim Division of Pioneer Girls.
25 Years Ago – May 26, 1993
50th Anniversary — On April 12, Charles and Nina Russell of Linneus celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. A reception was held at the Linneus Fire Station with a heart-shaped cake made by Gail Cyr. David and Cathy Russell were in charge of the guest book and music was supplied by Steven Scott. The couple received a money tree and an assortment of cards and gifts.
Healthy start — The grand opening of the new offices for the Aroostook Mental Health Center last week was kicked off by Dave Brown, project manager for Buildings, Etc., Joyce Fitzpatrick, town council member, Bob Vickers, executive director of AMHC, Bruce Glick, office director of AMHC, Wes Davidson, assistant director of AMHC, Marguerite Lawler, first vice-president of the Chamber of Commerce and Nancy Ketch, executive director of the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce.
