HOULTON, Maine — Greater Houlton Christian Academy (GHCA) will hold its 21st annual Bike-a-thon and Spaghetti Supper on Saturday, June 2, but this year’s event features a notable change.
Now entering its second decade, this year’s bike-a-thon has been updated to better reflect the interests of our participants.
“We will focus on our most popular routes, the 10- and 20-mile routes,” Deb Jacques, Bike-a-thon chairman, explained Wednesday, May 23. “Due to lack of participation we will no longer have the 60 and 100 mile routes. In its place we are encouraging our middle and high school students who prefer to run versus bike to do the 5-mile walk/run route.”
Funds from the bike-a-thon are used to support GHCA’s annual fund. This year’s goal is to raise $20,000.
“Our students are working hard to collect pledges and raise money toward our annual fund which helps keep tuition as low as possible for all families who attend GHCA,” Headmaster Tom Zimmerman said. “If you have been approached by a student and agreed to support them in this year’s event, thank you for supporting them and our school. We are grateful for the outpouring of community support we continue to receive each year.”
Again this year we will have a small route near the school for the little ones who attend Little Eagles Preschool and GHCA Pre-K programs. To ensure everyone’s safety, GHCA is requesting all pet owners leash or house their pets between 7 a.m. and noon along the bike-a-thon routes.
Additionally, they ask drivers to take extra caution as well. The shorter routes will cover the following roads: White Settlement, Catalina, Hodgdon Mills, Walker Road, Porter Settlement, Bangor Road and County Road.
The spaghetti supper will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Southern Aroostook Agricultural Museum. The cost of the supper is by donation and is open to the public.
As a local ministry GHCA’s mission is to provide an academically-solid education that is in harmony with Biblical values. Applications are now being accepted for the 2018/2019 school year. It has provided a Christian education to students from Aroostook County, Maine, New Brunswick, Canada and overseas students for 34 years.
