National Active and Retired Federal Employees to discuss Alzheimer’s

CARIBOU, Maine — National Active and Retired Federal Employees, Aroostook County chapter, will hold their regular luncheon meeting on Thursday, May 24, at the Caribou Inn and Convention Center, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

The program will feature Adam Lacher of the Maine Chapter of the American Alzheimer’s Association.  The public is invited to the event, which will include a luncheon followed by Lacher’s presentation. The fee for lunch is $11. The program will run until 1:30 pm. Cary Medical Center is co-sponsoring the event and has extended a special invitation to the hospital’s Seniority Members.

Lacher will focus on the myths and misperceptions about dementia that perpetuate stigma and fear.  The association’s Maine Chapter offers “Act on Alzheimer’s,” an educational talk designed to help individuals take an active role in the fight to end the disease.  This talk is suitable for families and individuals facing Alzheimer’s, as well as community members and healthcare professionals across the state. The goal is to discredit these myths and common misunderstandings and increase understanding of the disease and compassion for those impacted by it.  The Alzheimer’s Association hopes that participants walk away knowing the most fundamental information regarding dementia.

Bill Flagg, Director of Community Relations and Development at Cary Medical Center, said Cary is grateful to NARFE for opening the program to the general public.

“Alzheimer’s disease is a serious and growing concern all over the world,” said Flagg, who coordinates a monthly meeting of the Caribou Alzheimer’s disease caregiver support group.  “At Cary we want to do all we can to increase earlier detection of Alzheimer’s, make people more aware of prevention strategies and learn about available resources. When we were invited to co-sponsor the presentation by the Alzheimer’s Association we were anxious to respond.”
