CARIBOU, Maine — Caribou senior Gabrielle Marquis and sophomore Parker Deprey each advanced into the quarterfinals of the MPA Tennis Singles Championships before finally being eliminated.
Marquis and Deprey were two of seven players from Aroostook County competing in the state tourney after qualifying at the Region l event held in Caribou May 12.
The first three rounds of the state event were held at Deering Oaks Park in Portland Friday and Saturday.
Marquis, seeded fourth for girls, drew a first-round bye before defeating Emma Wadsworth of Marancook in Readfield, 6-1, 6-2. In the Round of 16, Marquis downed Katie Gilman of Cape Elizabeth in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, before being upset by No. 12 Jocelyn Bolt of Gorham, 6-3, 6-1.
Deprey was the boys’ sixth seed and stopped Connor Lee of Bangor in his first match, 6-3, 6-3. Deprey then got past No. 11 Cooper Russell of Camden Hills, 6-0, 6-4, in the Round of 16 before dropping his quarterfinal match against Alex Klemperer of Falmouth, 6-3, 6-3.
Another seeded player, Ashley Matlock at No. 11, defeated Lauren Paradise of Portland, 6-1, 6-3, in the second round and then was beaten by No. 6 Caitlin Cass of Lincoln Academy, 6-1, 6-2, in the Round of 16.
Caribou’s Hailey Holmquist beat Becca Johnson of John Bapst in a first-round match, 6-1, 6-2, but then lost to No. 10 Anastasia Kapothanasis of Cheverus, 6-0, 6-1.
Sarah Pelletier of Fort Kent fell to Roslynn Wailus of Lewiston in the first round, 6-2, 6-1.
On the boys’ side, the Vikings’ Gabe Rand and Andre Daigle of the Presque Isle Wildcats both fell in first-round matches. Wes Goodwin of Freeport bested Rand, 6-2, 6-0, while Kobe Tibbetts of Madison gained a straight set 6-4, 6-3 victory over Daigle.
Alec Cyr of Caribou was unable to participate due to an injury.
The Penobscot Valley Conference doubles tournament was supposed to be held Saturday at Old Town, but was cancelled due to the threat of rain.
