Once again, the two-legged and “four-legged” friends of the Central Aroostook Humane Society came out to support one of our biggest fundraisers of the year. Even though it felt more like April with the cool temperatures and brisk wind, brave souls showed up early to show their support, enjoy the walk and also have some hot coffee and wonderful homemade treats.
The shelter employees and board of directors work hard to make this event a successful one. A whopping $1,296 was raised to support the shelter animals and to help us continue to do the work that needs to be done. We gave out various prizes for different categories, but it was longtime shelter supporter Kim Sebold who had the highest pledges. Jonnie Hallett who got a prize for traveling the farthest; she was visiting from Howland and wanted to join in the fun.
We are truly grateful for so many folks and businesses that help make this fundraiser such a success.
Many folks have a preference for either dogs or cats, and then there are many who like both. This article will deal with those who feel strongly that cats are best for the following reasons.
According to pets4homes.com cats were once worshipped as gods. Dogs are considered man’s best friend, but in ancient Egypt cats were worshipped as gods, something cats have never forgotten. We know dogs are easily pleased, but earning a cat’s respect and affection can be more difficult. Cat lovers know they have to work to earn the cat’s love, but it is very rewarding when you know you are the chosen one.
Another plus is that you can fit several cats into your bed and still have room for yourself. Also, there is nothing like relaxing and hearing a cat or cats purr.
Quietness is one of the pleasant things about cat ownership. Occasionally a Siamese or Bengal will be very vocal, but generally cats don’t bark at the mailman. Taking care of a cat can be cheaper than caring for a dog when it comes to food, vet care, toys and boarding. It can be very difficult to house a dog in a small apartment, but a cat can be perfectly comfortable and happy.
Cat lovers say cats never have to be walked, and that is a big plus over having a dog, especially for very busy folks. Responsible dog owners must pick up after their dogs, but as cat owners say, cats are so much easier when it comes to their toileting needs … just provide a litter box, and a cat will take care of his own needs and even bury the waste.
Dogs need to be walked rain or shine, or at least get some outside exercise, whereas cats are very independent and don’t need to be walked as they have their own way of getting exercise.
Best of all, cat owners can leave a cat alone for a period of time. They should never be left alone for the long term, but overnight is perfectly acceptable provided food, water, toys and the litterbox are available. Cats are very independent and enjoy their own company. However, dogs, if they are left alone for very long, can become bored and maybe destructive, plus they need to be let out two or three times a day for toileting.
Dogs or cats or both — everyone is different and ownership is a personal choice. Please visit the Central Aroostook Humane Society to select the perfect animal for you. Our hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, closing for lunch from 12 to 12:30.
