Peter (left) is an 8-month old neutered male feral cat currently living at the Halfway Home Pet Rescue Adoption Center. Peter and his sister, Paula (background), were trapped in Caribou last winter and now enjoy a safe environment. Though they are at the Adoption Center, it will be a few more months before they are fully domesticated and adoptable. They will probably never lose their predator instinct to hunt rodents. It will take many months for the volunteers to earn their trust, but each week finds them just a little bit more interested in the world of domestic cats. With continued visits and playtime, Peter and Paula will slowly relax and eventually stop thinking of humans as their enemy. This miracle has happened with hundreds of young feral cats with a lot of time and patience. Older feral cats generally cannot be domesticated but may chose to allow people to feed and provide food and warm shelter and in exchange they will keep a person’s home and land free from rodents.
