Charles Eck Newsome Jr.

NEW SWEDEN, Maine – Charles Eck Newsome Jr., passed away peacefully after a brief illness on May 30, 2018, with his beloved wife, Linda, at his side. Born on August 16, 1941, in Texas City, Texas, he was the son of Edith Newsome and Charles Eck Newsome Sr.
Upon high school graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1959 to 1967 on the USS Amberjack, a Gato class submarine. After his discharge, he worked for several insurance companies before starting his own very successful financial planning company: Planning Consultants Inc. He retired in 2017.
In addition to raising a family in Charleston, SC, he served his community through the JCs, Sertoma International, and the Shriners. As a Christian, he served his Lord as a deacon in the Presbyterian Church and later in the Baptist Church. His hobbies included refurbishing old VWs with his best friend and neighbor, Eddie Lewis. The children were primarily the fortunate recipients of these cars, along with dirt bikes and motorcycles.
In 1995, he married his present wife, Linda, and moved to northern Maine to help care for her dad and plan for retirement. He and his brother-in-law, John Anderson, rebuilt the family home, one room at a time, over nine years. Charles also enjoyed fishing, boating, working with the Boys Brigade church program, and serving as First Selectman for the Town of New Sweden for eight years. He was a member of the Stockholm Sportsmen’s Club.
He was predeceased by his parents, his only sister, Carolyn Blackburn, and his youngest son, Timothy Ray Newsome.
Besides his wife of 23 years, he will be greatly missed by his son, Charles Scott Newsome, and his wife, Cherie, of Cumming, GA, and children Brandon, Charles Michael, and Emily Kate; Sheryl Lynn Lord of Goose Creek, SC, and children, Sean R., Sydney Elizabeth, and Taylor Cody; and Stacy Elizabeth Domingo of N. Charleston, SC, her husband, Henry, and children, Gabrielle Sierra and Henry Joe. In addition, he is survived by a step-son, Duard S. Nunnally III of New Sweden, and two great-grandchildren, Charles Gavin and Kylee Ann.
Services will be held at the Woodland Baptist Church in Woodland, on Friday, June 8, 2018, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Ron Rosser officiating. Memorials may be made in his name to the church.
