PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle Elks will host a Flag Day Ceremony at the Elks Lodge, located at 508 Main Street in Presque Isle, on Flag Day, Thursday, June 14, 2018, at 6 p.m.
In announcing the event, Tai Ireland, exalted ruler of the Presque Isle Elks, Lodge 1954, said, “The Elks Flag Day Ceremony will feature pageantry, patriotic music, and a presentation by the Loring Job Corps color guard of various flags of historical significance in the evolution of the flag of our nation. Harry Hafford, chairman of the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery, will deliver relevant remarks.”
Ireland stated, “Flag Day has been recognized in the halls of every Elks Lodge in this nation for over 100 years. Flag Day commemorates the adoption of a national flag for the United States on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. It is especially fitting that Flag Day should be celebrated at the Elks’ Lodge in this city, as the Presque Isle Elks Lodge has repeatedly been recognized by our city council as the most patriotic organization in this community.”
Flag Day also has a close connection to the United States Army, whose birthday is also on June 14, 1777, when the Continental Army of the United States was adopted by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.
At the conclusion of the Flag Day ceremony, a light meal will be provided free of charge to all those in attendance. This event is open to the public and entirely free.
