WASHINGTON, D.C. — Republican lawmakers and President Donald Trump searched anxiously Tuesday for a way to end the administration’s policy of separating families after illegal border crossings, with their focus shifting to a new plan to keep children in detention longer than now permitted — but with their parents.
The move comes after a loud outcry this week over the separation of immigrant children from their parents.
Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins joined 12 other GOP senators who sent a letter Tuesday to U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, calling for a halt to the practice of separating families who have illegally crossed the U.S.-Mexico border.
“Although enforcing our immigration laws is an essential responsibility of the federal government, it must be done in a way that is consistent with our values and ordinary human decency,” states the letter, which was led by Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch.
