100 Years Ago – June 26, 1918
Attend meeting — Leonard A. Pierce and A. K. Stetson were in Portland last week attending a meeting of the County committeemen of the State for the War Savings stamps, which was addressed by Frank A. Vanderlip of Washington, D. C.
New position — Moody Gerow, for nine years a valued employee at Palmer’s Dandy Kitchen, has resigned his position there and has accepted a position at the Houlton Woolen Mill.
75 Years Ago – July 1, 1943
New service club presidents — At the final meeting of the club year, James Archibald, newly elected president of the Houlton Rotary Club, assumed his duties, accepting the gavel of authority from the retiring president, Edwin Arnold. J. Norman Mullen was elected president of the Lions Club at the meeting held in the vestry of the Congregational Church. He succeeds retiring president Jasper Lycette.
War Bond drive — July 1 marks the opening of a nationwide War Bond and Stamp sales drive in 1,610 J. C. Penney Company department stores throughout the country. As a send-off to the campaign, Secretary of the Treasury Henry J. Morgenthau, Jr., prepared a message of congratulations and good wishes addressed to every Penney employee. In every Penney store, War Bonds are promoted as ‘July’s Best Buy.’ This week, Penney store windows from coast to coast stress the fighting ships that War Bonds buy.
50 Years Ago – June 26, 1968
Receive pins — At a recent meeting of the Columbus Guild, which is presently celebrating its 32nd year, 10 members received 25-year service pins. They were Mrs. Susie Callnan; charter member; Mrs. Hilda Davenport; Mrs. Catherine Hurley; Mrs. Margaret Haggerty; Mrs. Mary Conlogue, charter member and Mrs. Beulah Callnan, charter member; Mrs. Mary Kervin, Mrs. Myrtle Donovan, Mrs. Etta Doherty and Mrs. Sarah Bradley, all charter members.
Honored at retirement — The Rev. and Mrs. Fraser A. Dunlop were honored at a retirement party at the Parkview Terrace by the executive committee of the Wesleyan Church. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Harding and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Cogswell were hosts and hostesses. Mrs. Terry Tracy was in charge of the guest book while Roger Mrs. Casey decorated the money tree which was presented to the Dunlops. Mrs. Dunlop was given a pink sweetheart rose corsage by her Sunday School class.
25 Years Ago – June 30, 1993
Farm family of the year — The Fitzpatrick family of Houlton has been named as the Maine Potato Blossom Farm Family of the year. The family will be honored at the annual Industry dinner at the Fort Fairfield Armory. The Fitzpatrick family can trace its farming roots back to the year 1900 when Garrett Fitzpatrick, originally from Belleville, New Brunswick, moved to Littleton where he purchased a 100-acre farm. Garrett married Margaret Crabbe, also from New Brunswick, in 1905. Together they raised a family of 10 children.
Outlet opening — Mars Hill Furniture’s new store — Houlton Appliance and Mattress Center — opened recently with the ceremonial ribbon cutting. At the ribbon cutting were: Nancy Ketch, executive director of the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce, Mike McLaughlin, chairman of the Houlton Town Council, Chris Austin, Manager of Houlton Appliance and Mattress, Toby Henderson, vice-president of Mars Hill Furniture, Dale Henderson, owner of Mars Hill Furniture, Chris Fitzpatrick, president of the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce, and Lewis Bone, town manager.
