Graves and Violette top field in S.W. Collins race

CARIBOU, Maine — Caribou’s Evan Graves and Ashley Violette recorded victories Sunday in the annual S.W. Collins 5K Road Race.

The race was the third in this year’s County Challenge Series.

The 36-year-old Graves defended his title and came in first overall with a time of 16 minutes and 51.2 seconds. He was 45 seconds ahead of runner-up Dylan Marrero of Caribou (17:37.8). Kyle Boucher, also of Caribou, came in third with a time of 18:33.2.

After finishing as the female runner-up in 2017, 17-year-old Ashley Violette, also of Caribou, led the way in the women’s division. Her time of 21:59.3 was 15th overall in the 46-runner field. She outpaced Kayley Bell, 13, who was the female runner-up in 22:08.2, and third-place finisher Julie Bouchard of Caribou, who crossed the finish line in 22:28.9.

The overall top 10 after Graves, Marrero and Boucher included, fourth, Matt Forshey, 19:05.2; fifth, Aaron Macek, 19:17.3; sixth, Bruce Clark, 19:49.5; seventh, Andrew Bouchard, 19:49.7; eighth, Luke Streinz, 20:12; ninth, Malachai Willey, 20:49.3; and 10th, George Ferland, 21:23.1.

Shelly and Tracey McHatten were the fastest walkers, coming in at 29:52.1 and 29:52.2, respectively. Six other walkers participated.

Age division winners were: 14-and-under females, Bell; 14-and-under males, Streinz; 15-18 females, Violette; 15-18 males, Marrero; 19-29 females, Amanda Kuczmiec, 22:31.9; 19-29 males, Forshey; 30-39 females, Bouchard; 30-39 males, Graves; 40-49 females, Shel Sherman, 23:37.8; 40-49 males, Mark Shea, 29:10.9; 50-59 females, Angela Ewings, 24:28; 50-59 males, Craig Reese, 21:27.6; 60-69 males, Clark.

A Kids Fun Run was also held as part of the event. The top finishers were: boys’ 4 years old and under, Easton Graves; girls’ 4 and under, Ava Rosser; boys’ 5-6, Andrew Rosser; girls’ 5-6, Annalise Griffeth; boys’ 7-8, Owen Tetlow; girls’ 7-8, Breanna Royer; boys’ 9-10, Isaac Staples; girls’ 9-10, Maggie Bell; and girls’ 11-12, Riley Pufahl.

The next County Challenge Series race is the Musterd Mile on July 6 in Caribou. Registration begins at 6 p.m. at Caribou High School, with the downhill mile, ending near Monica’s Scandinavian Gift Shop, beginning at 7 p.m. Contact P.J. Gorneault at pgorneault@rsu39.org for more information.
