STOCKHOLM, Maine – Birdina ‘Birdie’ Signe Sandstrom died peacefully on June 23, 2018. She had been surrounded by many family members and friends who came to share her final days with recounting favorite memories of fun times. She was born on May 1, 1931, to the late Edgar and Signe (Anderson) Olivenbaum.
She attended the Jemtland School and graduated from Caribou High School in 1949. She was married to Carl (Buddy) Sandstrom for 65 years and together they raised four children. Birdie worked in the potato harvest for many years and provided child care for numerous families. She enjoyed being a homemaker and entertaining family and friends. She especially enjoyed hosting her annual birthday party and the Christmas Day gatherings at her home.
She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Stockholm where she attended the Bible study group and participated in WELCA activities. Birdie served as a ballot clerk for the town of Stockholm for many years. She was a member of the Stockholm Historical Society.
She is survived by her children, Cindy and her husband, Roger Darrieulat, of El Cajon, CA; Kristi Kelley of Presque Isle, ME; Jean and her husband, Dale Wight, of New Sweden, ME; and Bruce Sandstrom of Portland, ME; as well as her former daughter-in-law, Connie Sandstrom of Presque Isle, ME. She has numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her husband, Buddy, her brother, Edwin Olivenbaum, and two grandsons, Adam Wight and Carl Darrieulat.
A graveside service will take place at the West Jemtland Cemetery on August 11, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. with refreshments at Trinity Lutheran Church following the service.
