100 Years Ago – July 10, 1918
New position — Miss Mary Carroll left Saturday for New York City where she has a federal position in the Postal Census department.
Trip for convention— Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Hutchinson were passengers on Saturday evening’s Pullman for Atlantic City, where Mr. Hutchinson will represent Houlton Lodge B. P. O. E. at the annual convention.
75 Years Ago – July 15, 1943
Transferred — Mr. and Mrs. Lewis M. Cummings spent Wednesday night as guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Baker. Mr. Cummings has been stationed in Houlton as radio officer and has been on a vacation, which he spent at his home in Nova Scotia. They left Thursday for Montreal, where he has been transferred.
Receives award — Mrs. Tessa Hall Gibson this week received the fourth highest award it is in the power of the State Director of Civilian Defense to bestow upon a member of a Civilian Defense unit. The award was in the form of a white bar containing four blue vertical bars flanking the CD insignia within a blue circle. Town Manager W. E. Brackett presented the Citizen’s Service Award to Mrs. Tessa H. Gibson for completing 3,000 hours of service in the cause of Civilian Defense.
50 Years Ago – July 10, 1968
Receives scholarship — The Business and Professional Women’s Club has awarded a $300 scholarship to Sandra Kirlin for the 1968-69 academic year. Miss Kirlin is the daughter of Mrs. Francis Kirlin. She is a 1967 graduate of Houlton High School and will attend Washington State College in the fall.
Cash winner — Beecher Cook, of Houlton was a recent winner of $125 at the Chain Apparel Store in Houlton. Mr. Cook’s name was drawn in the weekly “banker’s night” held on Saturday nights by the local store.
25 Years Ago – July 14, 1993
Citizen of the year — Dawn Degenhardt received her Paul Harris Citizen of the Year award from Walter Goodrich, incoming Rotary president, and Nancy Ketch, Rotary’s outgoing president.
All made up and ready to go — Aloette Cosmetics recently held the grand opening of its Main Street store and Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Nancy Ketch, Retail Trade Board President Kathleen Armel, Marshall MacFarlane, Aloette director, Jennifer Ritchie, beauty consultant, Jackie MacFarlane, president, Martha-Elise Allen, manager of a New Brunswick franchise, Daphne Nason, beauty consultant, Shelly Farrar, ‘Queen of Recruiting,’ Town Council Chairman Michael McLaughlin, Chamber of Commerce President Christopher Fitzpatrick and Town Manager Lewis Bone marked the occasion with a ribbon cutting.
