100 Years Ago – July 17, 1918
Canning demonstration — Miss Eunice H. Niles, emergency demonstrator for Aroostook County, will demonstrate canning of fruits and vegetables at the dining room of the Methodist Church, July 26. Canning of meats and fish will also be demonstrated. Miss Niles is a bright, earnest young woman and everyone will want to attend, especially those who were present at her cooking demonstration several weeks ago.
Making improvements — McGary Bros. Grocery Co. are making improvements in the interior of their store, having removed several partitions and enlarging their office.
75 Years Ago – July 22, 1943
Local heroes — This week the windows of the J. C. Penney Company department store show pictures of local men and women serving with the armed forces. Penney’s entire staff is dedicated to the sale of War Bonds and Stamps in their honor. “Bonds save lives” is the selling theme in over 1,600 other communities where Penney stores are located. The pictures of servicemen on display at Penney’s here have been borrowed for the occasion from local people — relatives and friends. Included among them is a photograph of one employee of the store now in service. This week, the emphasis is on life-saving needs — ambulances, rafts and parachutes.
Collections — Tin can collections definitely will be held in Aroostook County and throughout the state this fall. The plan for can collections in Aroostook will be to start a freight car at Madawaska or some northern point in the county and make successive stopovers at Caribou, Presque Isle, Mars Hill, Houlton and other points south through the county until one or more full cars have been obtained.
50 Years Ago – July 17, 1968
Attending workshop — Mrs. Ruth Snell and Mrs. Frances Esty, business education teachers at Houlton High, are participating in a workshop, New Methods of Teaching Typewriting, being conducted by Prof. Regis Horace of the University of Vermont with Dr. S.H. Wanous of the University of California as guest instructor for the session.
The winner — Winner of the portable dishwasher given away by the Retail Trade Board during the annual Houlton Potato Peast Sales Days was Mrs. Ronald Brewer of the Ludlow Road. Mrs. Brewer was presented with her door prize given at the end of the five-day sales event by RTB chairman. Eugene Hutchinson. Her name was drawn from thousands of entries during the Miss Houlton pageant held last Wednesday.
25 Years Ago – July 21, 1993
Direct musical — David L. Jackins, a 1979 graduate of Houlton High School and a 1983 graduate of the University of Maine at Presque Isle, will return to Aroostook County to direct an original musical theatre production written by himself entitled “Louder Than Words” at UMPI’s Pioneer Playhouse in August.
Scholarship recipients — The Houlton Regional Health Services Foundation recently named four young women from the greater Houlton area to receive education scholarships. The 1993 scholarships are being awarded in memory of Joe and Hildred Adams. Holly Lilley of Oakfield, Holly McGraw of Island Falls, Heather Irish of Danforth, and Lori Ouellette of Houlton will each receive a $1,500 scholarship from the Foundation.
