CASTLE HILL, Maine — A fire that destroyed a two-unit apartment building, garage and barn in Castle Hill last night remains under investigation, according to Mapleton firefighter Robby Gross.

One of the tenants called the Mapleton Fire Department at 5:12 p.m. to report the fire and crews from Mapleton, Presque Isle, Caribou, Easton, Washburn and Ashland responded.

Firefighters who arrived shortly after the call found the two-story apartment building, garage and barn engulfed in flames. Only two tenants lived in the building and both were out when firefighters arrived, according to Gross.

Crews fought the fire for about four hours before finally putting it out at around 9:15 p.m., he said.

Gross said the cause remains under investigation but firefighters believe the fire started in the garage area.

The rental property is owned by Rowell McHatten of Castle Hill and was insured, according to the firefighter.

The American Red Cross issued a press release Thursday indicating the organization is assisting the two displaced tenants, whose names were not released, “to ensure that they have food, a safe place to sleep and other essentials.”
