HOULTON, Maine — The 29th annual County Open golf tournament drew a field of 53 talented golfers to the Houlton Community Golf Club on Saturday. Eighty-eight golfers also participated in the scramble at VaJoWa the following day as part of the same fundraiser for the Health Services Foundation.
Austin Lancaster, grandson of County Open founder Bob Anderson, was the 2018 County Open Tournament champion at Houlton Community Golf Club with his score of 70 in the Men’s A Division. Lancaster has won the event four times.
“We’re so thrilled that the weather cooperated this year,” said County Open Chairman Jackie White. “Two years ago we had to delay the scramble start and last year we lost power during the scramble due to heavy rains and lightning. This year was the best weather we’ve had for the last several years.”
A total of 53 golfers participated in the Saturday tournament at Houlton Community Golf Club, while the scramble on Sunday at VaJoWa had 22 teams (88 golfers), which is the most golfers to participate since 2007, White said.

“Although there were several other events this weekend, we managed to have 11 new or past golfers who have not participated in several years,” White added.
The golf event serves as one of the major fundraisers for the Health Services Foundation, whose mission is to “support excellence in health care by seeking funds and administering gifts to assist non-profit health and wellness agencies with financial support to ensure the continuity of health care while supporting education opportunities throughout our region.”
“For the past four years we’ve been able to donate $20,000 to the Health Services Foundation each year and we’re hopeful that this year will exceed that goal,” White said. “Since 1998, the County Open events have raised $602,000 for the Health Services Foundation.”
The 2018 County Open Tournament champion was Austin Lancaster who shot a two-under par 70 at Houlton Saturday. Lancaster, who is the grandson of County Open founder Bob Anderson, is a four-time winner of the County Open.
Complete results from the event were:
Men’s A Division — first gross, Lancaster, 70; second gross Troy Adams, 71; and third gross Jerry York, 72. First net, Ben Tuttle, 63.0; second net, Ritchie Flowers, 65.3; and third net, Drew Marino, 65.5.
Men’s B Division — first gross, Rick Goodwin, 78; second gross, Chuck Moody, 83; and third gross, Bob Gray, 84. First net, Wyatt Harvey, 62.9; second net, Kevin Tuttle, 66.7; and third net, David Edgar, 69.8.
Men’s C Division — first gross, Tom Moakler, 82; and second gross, Tyler Putnam, 95. First net, Joe McAuliffe, 68.6; and second net, Wayne Quint, 71.1.
Ladies Division — first gross, Misty Marino, 82; and second gross, Lauren McAuliffe, 93. First net, Pam Mailman, 65.9; and second net, Harriet Gray, 70.6.
The longest drive winners were Porter Gervais and Misty Marino. Pin winners were Drew Marino and Mailman, hole No. 3; Mike Fleming and Barbara Moakler, hole No. 8; and Clay Halliday, hole No. 12.
On Sunday, the golf action shifted to VaJoWa Golf Course in Island Falls for a Scramble format. Results on the day were as follows: first gross, Drew Marino, Nick Chase, Porter Gervais and Alex Donovan, 55; second gross, Halliday, Scot Walker, Warren Walker and Steve Merry, 57; and third gross, Nick Cullen, Jamie Leavitt, Ben Walker and Brandon McLaughlin, 58.
Net winners were: first, Joshua Bennett, Tim O’Donnell, Henry Carpenter and Jeremy Tarr, 40.6; second, Steve Walker, Hunter Walker, Scott Althouse and Parker Walker, 43.8; and third, Randy Lincoln, Sharon O’Donnell, Brent Lincoln and Bob McCarthy, 44.2.
The longest drives went to Porter Gervais and Ashley Wallace, while pin winners were Tyler Putnam, hole No. 4; Bill Robinson, hole No. 7; and Porter Gervais, holes No. 11 and 16.
