PRESQUE ISLE – Mother Nature must like strawberry shortcakes too, because the weather remained favorable throughout the day June 21, providing a perfect opportunity for the Presque Isle Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual sale to go off without a hitch.
“We did really well and dodged the rain once again,” said Allen Deeves, executive director of the PIACC.
Funds from this year’s sale will be used toward the Chamber’s operating costs.
“Revenue from the event came to $7,875, less expenses,” said Deeves.
But success, according to Deeves, would not have been possible without the many volunteers who served up and delivered the delectable treats.
“We had about 25 people help out throughout the day, volunteering for deliveries and preparation. We visited seven area communities, delivering orders in each,” said Deeves.
Image In all, 2,625 strawberry shortcakes were prepared, each selling for $3. A Presque Isle business placed the largest order.
“The biggest order we sold was 120 shortcakes to Connect North America,” said Deeves.
The majority of sales, however, went to individuals looking to buy just enough for family members to enjoy later that day.
“I’m taking them home to my kids. This is the second year I’ve bought them and we plan to enjoy every bite,” said Lisa Mallett, of Fort Fairfield. “We were out and about and decided to stop and buy some.”
Volunteers were rewarded through the smiles and greetings they received from happy recipients of the luscious snack.
“We’ve been making deliveries,” said Cindy Theriault, a volunteer from Personal Services of Aroostook speaking on behalf of herself and volunteer Cleta McBreairty. “It’s nice to volunteer, especially when you’re delivering a dessert all enjoy.” Image
And enjoy is exactly what all did who purchased this year’s batch of strawberry shortcakes.
