ISLAND FALLS, Maine — The Thirsty Thursday evening scramble was competitive. The team of Becky Kelley, Peter Lawlor, Peter and Carol Blood nipped Clay Halliday, Ralph and Valerie Powers, 36 to 37. Another Stroke back in third were Greg Gayne, Bev Osborn and Bill and Joyce Larson. Again this week, try to sign up by 5 p.m., with a scheduled shotgun start at 5:15 p.m.
In the Sunday afternoon Pairs and Spares, the team of Peter Lawlor, Greg Gayne, Ralph Powers and Betty Smallwood birdied three holes in a row — Nos. 6, 7, and 8 — to shoot a nifty 33. Finishing second, also with three birdies were Jon Smallwood, John Porter, Brent Kelley and Val Powers. Bogies on 1 and 9 left them shooting 35. Third spot went to Tom Ryan, Don Metzger, Candy Kelley and Deb Porter with 38.
In the twilight league playoffs, Brent Kelley and Tom Daggett nipped Clay Halliday and Steve Edwards on the second hole of sudden death after tying 37 each after nine holes. In other matches, Bill Dwyer and Warren Walker edged Mark Elwell and Richard Schmidt 36 to 37, Garth Townsend and Joey Bishop bested Scot and Ethan Walker 34 to 39 and Scott Savage and Greg Gayne defeated Adam Derosier and Lauren McAuliffe 32 to 34.
VaJoWa Field Day will be this Saturday, August 25, with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. The cost is $20 for members and $30 for non-members and includes prizes in gross and net categories with twice as many net winners paid out. Also included is a barbecue chicken dinner. Call the pro shop at 463-2128 to sign up individually or with your foursome. Your participation will make this like the famed old time Field Day’s of yesteryear.
The Upper St John Valley Seniors will play at VaJoWa Wednesday, Aug. 22. The course will be closed to play until 4 p.m., as 97 golfers are scheduled to play.
The Slice Restaurant has new late summer hours, open Monday through Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Friday through Sunday opening at 11 a.m.
