ISLAND FALLS, Maine — The fine summer weather has made for some good golf at VaJoWa. The Annual Field was well attended and good scores were recorded.
Finishing first gross with a three under par 69 was Scot Walker shooting 35 on the front and 34 on the back. It was a great round of golf. Finishing second with a 74 was Nick Cullen, and winding out the top tree was Warren Walker with a 75.
Low net honors went to Bill Dwyer with a 66. One stroke back was Hunter Walker with a 67. Finishing in a tie for third were Steve Merry, Clay Halliday and Jon Smallwood at 68.
Closest to the pin winners were Scot Walker on No. 4 at 9-feet 2 inches, Cullen on No. 7 at 6-9, Hunter Walker on No. 11 at 9-9 and Andy Ivey on No. 16 at 24 feet. Skin winners were Scot Walker on Nos. 11 and 13, Cullen on No. 5, Halliday on No. 17 and Warren Walker on No. 18.
After the round a fine BBQ dinner was enjoyed by all.
On Wednesday, 98 senior golfers played in a steady drizzle. Overall, they enjoyed the day of golf which was followed by an excellent roast beef dinner. VaJoWa winners in Division A were low gross, Warren Walker with 73 and Halliday came in second net with a 67. In Division F, Brent Kelley finished second gross with a 92.
Winners in the Sunday pairs and spares were Tom Ryan, Betty Smallwood and April Bates with a 34. Finishing second were Ricky Bates, Candy Smallwood and Carol Blood with a 35. Coming third, two strokes back, were Bev Osborn, Cecil Hanson, Brent Kelley and Jon Smallwood.
The twilight league is down to the final two teams. Kelley and Daggett defeated Townsend and Bishop 38 to 44 and Dwyer and Walker beat Savage and Gayne 32 to 38. The final will be contested over 18 holes.
Coming up on Saturday, Sept. 8, is the Founders Day Red, White and Blue Scramble. It is a shotgun start at 10 a.m. It is a four person event where you play six holes from each of the red, white and blue markers.
Make it a point to come out and play a round this week and enjoy a meal and beverage at the Slice. The restaurant is open daily from 4 to 8pm, and opening Friday through Sunday at 11 a.m. The Slice will also be open on Labor Day at 11 a.m.
