EDWARD P. WILLIAMS, M.D., HOULTON – Edward P. Williams, 89, passed away on Monday, August 20, 2018, at his residence while surrounded by his family. He was born on March 11, 1929, in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Percy and Kathleen (McBrine) Williams.
The family moved to Linneus, ME, in 1937 and resided there until he returned to New York for his medical education in 1953. He was a graduate of Ricker Classical Institute in 1947, and he also graduated from Bowdoin College where he was a member and past president of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and a James Bowdoin Scholar. On August 21, 1953, Edward married Nadine Tidd. They then moved to New York where Edward attended Cornell Medical School. While there he served as President of Phi-Chi medical fraternity. Following his internship and residency, he moved to Salina, Kansas where he served as Captain in the Medical Division of the U.S. Air Force. Edward and Nadine returned to Houlton in 1958 to begin a medical practice as a family physician. He also provided emergency room coverage while serving as the Emergency Room Director for several years. He retired from active practice in 1996 and following that he served as Medical Director for Madigan Estates Nursing Home.
He was past president of the Maine Academy of Family Practice. He was a member of the American Academy of Family Practice, Aroostook County Medical Society, Maine Medical Association, American College of Emergency Physician, and Flying Physicians Association. Edward served his community and was a member of the Houlton Lodge of Elks, Monument Lodge of Masons, the Anah Temple Shrine, as well as Houlton Flying Club. He was a past member and friend of the Military Street Baptist Church.
He is survived by his loving wife, Nadine Williams; a daughter, Sheryl Martin and her husband, Michael; and a son, Jonathan Williams and his wife, Nancy; as well as four grandchildren, Lindsay Tomah and her husband, Andrew, Kelsey Martin, Taylor Martin and his wife, Meghan, and Geoff Williams and his wife, Tegan. He also leaves behind a brother, William Williams and his wife, Joanie. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Robert Williams.
Friends called at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 25, 2018, at Military Street Baptist Church, Houlton, where a service was conducted at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Randall Burns officiating. A reception immediately followed the service at the church fellowship hall. A private burial took place at Littleton Cemetery.
