CARIBOU, Maine — Jarret “Jerry” McLaughlin was an avid golfer who loved helping kids — especially those who were passionate about the sport of golf.
McLaughlin was a long-time member of Caribou Country Club and after he passed away, his family initiated a golf scramble in his memory and established two annual $500 scholarships to high school seniors who are members of the golfing community, The recipients must either be on the varsity golf team or within the Caribou Country Club family of golfers.
The fourth annual Jarret “Jerry” McLaughlin Memorial Scramble was played Aug. 25 at Caribou Country Club and prior to the tourney, this year’s scholarship recipients, Libby Boone of Presque Isle and Andrew Evans of Caribou, were recognized.
Boone is a senior at Presque Isle HIgh School who plans to further her education in the University of Maine system to pursue a career in education. Boone is a fourth-year member of the golf team and has served as captain as a junior and this year. She has qualified for the state schoolgirl individual tournament each of the past two seasons.
Evans graduated from Caribou High School in June and is attending Northern Maine Community College to study diesel hydraulics. He started on the Carlisle golf team as a senior.
Jerry McLaughlin’s wife, Janet, and their daughter Andrea McLaughlin-Dumais, along with Carlisle golf coach Marc Weeks presented the scholarships during the opening ceremony.
Twenty one members of this year’s Carlisle golf team, consisting of players from both Caribou and Presque Isle, played in the tournament in a non-competitive atmosphere, to support their past and present teammates who were awarded scholarships. The field also included two past scholarship recipients, Donovan Savage and Tyler Dombroski.
