SHERMAN MILLS, Maine — A Stacyville man was arrested on several drug charges Saturday after a traffic stop in Sherman Mills.
Chief Deputy Shawn Gillen, acting sheriff of the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office, said Tuesday that the arrest occurred after Deputy Rick York stopped a Ford F-150 driven by Jordan Pelkey, 26, on Main Street.
York found what he believed to be a small amount of crystal methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle, according to Gillen. He also found items alleged to have been used to make methamphetamine.
Deputy Sheriff Forrest Dudley, who is assigned to the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, was on patrol for the sheriff’s office at the time and responded to assist York.
Gillen said the two deputies then decided to seize the vehicle and had it towed to the secure impound lot at the Maine State Police barracks in Houlton. Agents from the MDEA’s lab team secured a search warrant and allegedly discovered a number of items used in the making of methamphetamine in the vehicle.
Pelkey was arrested and charged with possession of drugs, unlawful operation of a methamphetamine lab, and violation of conditions of release. The Stacyville man was out on bail on a previous drug possession charge and now is being held in the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton.
He faces up to ten years in prison if convicted, Gillen said Tuesday.
Darrell Crandall, MDEA commander, said that this is the fortieth response this year by MDEA’s lab team to process “volatile and hazardous components” allegedly used to make methamphetamine. By comparison, there were 58 responses in all of 2017, 126 in 2016 and 56 in 2015.
The MDEA was assisted by members of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the Houlton Fire Department.
