HOULTON, Maine — After the many events that have happened over the last couple of weeks, it was nice to slow down a little this week. Monday afternoon we had the final match in the Men’s Twilight League between Ray Mailman and Jon Turner and Bill Dwyer and Ted Pettingill. After a hard fought battle, the crown goes to Dwyer and Pettingill. Congratulations on a successful season.
This past weekend our annual Cross Country Par Three Scramble. We had 66 enthusiastic golfers on Sunday for the nine-hole tournament to benefit the 2019 Houlton Project Grad program. Victory went to the team of P.J., Wyatt, and Garrett Harvey, with Brian Swallow, shooting a 4-under par 23. Second place went to Team Tuttle, Nathan, Andrew, Kevin, and David Tuttle one stroke back at 24.
At two-under were Jane and Jerry York, David Edgar, and Merrill Levin. Winning the scorecard playoff of all at 1-under was the team of Collin Moody, Rhett’s and Isaac Vega, and Duncan McCormack. All were rewarded with homemade pies.
Coming this Saturday is the Elks Club Ryan Wright Memorial Scramble. The nine hole tourney starts at 1 p.m. Call the proshop or the Elks Club to sign up.
The Lakeside Restaurant will have Paul LaPointe playing for your listening pleasure on Friday Sept. 28. Chef Bill’s new fall menu will be coming out soon, so keep an eye out in the Pioneer Times. Call Nancy at 694-9494 for reservations.
A suggestion by some golfers was to periodically add a few golf etiquette rules here to inform and increase your pleasure while you are playing. The number one complaint all golfers have seems to be the pace of play. When playing with your group, practice “ready golf.”
That means split up as you approach your balls, and when you are ready, go ahead and make your shot, being considerate of your friends. Using this method will speed up your play. This doesn’t mean you have to run to your ball. Golf is supposed to be enjoyable. But four guys standing over each shot is intimidating and it will take you a lot longer to complete your round. Have a great time and we will see you on the course.
