CARIBOU, Maine — Some Aroostook County residents awoke to chilly temperatures and frost Monday morning, with record cold observed in parts of the region for this particular date in recorded history.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Caribou said Monday that Winterville was the coldest spot in the state Monday morning with a temperature of 18 degrees.
Caribou saw a temperature of 26 degrees, which broke the previous record of 27 degrees for the date last set on Sept. 24, 1963, according to Meteorologist Todd Foisy,
Houlton saw a temperature of 23 degrees, which broke the previous record temperature of 25 degrees set in 1995.
There were temperature disparities across the state, however, according to the NWS.
It was 47 degrees in Jonesport and Frenchboro and 45 degrees in Bar Harbor, while at the other end of the spectrum, it was 19 degrees at Estcourt Station, 20 degrees in Fort Kent, and 22 degrees in Big Black River.
Temperatures in southern Aroostook were a bit warmer, with Linneus recording a temperature of 25 degrees, Monticello and Island Falls seeing a temperature of 31 degrees, and Smyrna Mills at 32 degrees.
Foisy said that it would be chilly again Tuesday with a potential for frost. He said that Bangor could see a record breaking low, as the temperature is expected to get down to 30 degrees in the city by Tuesday morning. That could break the previous record low of 30 degrees.
A soaking rain is in store for late Tuesday into Wednesday evening, according to Foisy.
