100 Years Ago – Sept. 25, 1918
Changing hands — The Campbell bakery business, so successfully conducted during the past four years by C. W. Davenport Jr., was sold last week to Eugene Garcelong and J. A. Cameron, both of whom are practical bakers. Both of these young men have had long experience in the business and are well and favorably known in their home town and we feel sure that their new business venture must prove successful.
Accepted position — Mrs. Roy Niles has accepted a position as bookkeeper for the E. E. Wentworth Corp. at their Houlton branch on Bangor Street.
75 Years Ago – September 30, 1943
Sell more bonds — Through the cooperation of the Houlton Air Force Base and the voluntary work of the mechanical force, a P-47 Thunderbolt was set up in the Market Square this week for three days to encourage greater war bond purchases.
Business meeting — It was voted to take as a project this year some material improvements in the Aroostook General Hospital and Nurses’ Home. The first task will be to furnish slipcovers at the home. It was felt that this was a worthwhile project, especially in view of the present emergency. Red Cross knitting will also be done. Committee: Mrs. Frand Rhoda, Mrs. Ida Gellerson and Mrs. Wilburt Carr.
50 Years Ago – September 25, 1968
Receives grant — Ricker College has received assurance of a grant of $50,000 from the Saudi Arabian government for the development of its program in Muslim World studies. Ricker’s president, C. Worth Howard, made this announcement today at a convocation held at the college in Houlton. He noted that the grant is the result of a presentation made to King Faisal by Dr. Abdulmunim Shakir, director of the program at Ricker. He added that this grant may well pave the way for support coming from other Arab countries and from American foundations, corporations and individuals with interests in the Middle East.
Rejoins staff — Marshall B. Hammond will rejoin the staff of the Houlton Pioneer Times as editor and publisher effective September 30 according to an announcement by Karl Hall, general manager of Northeast Publishing Company, parent organization of this newspaper. Mr. Hall announced that John R. Faulkner who has been editor and publisher since January 1, 1968 will transfer to the Presque Isle office of Northeast Publishing Company in an executive capacity.
25 Years Ago – September 29, 1993
Health scholarship — Paul Forest, president of the Houlton Regional Health Services Foundation, presented a scholarship check for $1,500 to Holly McGraw of Island Falls. Holly was one of four recipients chosen to receive scholarships from the foundation in 1993. She will attend the University of New England to become a physical therapist.
Opens in Houlton — Hospitality International, Inc., the Atlanta-based hotel franchise company for Red Carpet Inns, Scottish Inns, Master Hosts Inns and Resorts, Passport Inns and Downtowner Motor Inns, announces a new Scottish Inns in Houlton, joining more than 150 Scottish Inns nationwide. The Houlton Scottish Inn, on Bangor Road, is owned by Pankaj Patel.
