HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton Parks and Recreation Department will open the Gentle Memorial Building gymnasium and game room for the fall and winter season starting Tuesday, Oct. 9.
The Game Room open hours for Grades 2-12 will be Mondays through Fridays, 2:45-5 p.m.;
Saturdays, 1-4 p.m.; and Sundays, 1-4 p.m.
Gym open hours for Grades 2-12 are Mondays through Fridays 2:45-5 p.m.; Saturdays, 1-4 p.m.; Sundays, 1-4 p.m. Both the gym and game room will be open from 1-5 p.m. on RSU 29 Early Release Days this school year.
Again this year, students may purchase a game room season pass, which entitles a youth to use the pool and ping pong tables throughout the open game room season. This does not include coin-operated games. The cost is $15 for Houlton residents and $20 for non-Houlton residents. If a youth does not invest in a season pass, the price for the use of the pool/ping pong table is 50 cents for 15 minutes.
Adult and youth supervisors will be provided at all open gym and game room hours. Any child in Grade 1 or younger must be accompanied by an adult to be at the recreation center for open gym and game room hours. Once a student enters, the are required to stay. Parents will be contacted for inappropriate behavior while using the center.
Other activities and programs offered this fall at the Houlton Recreation Department are:
Parent and Tot Time — This activity begins Tuesday, Oct. 9. The time for this activity will be 8:30-10 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This unstructured play time gives parents and tots the opportunity to meet new friends. Some toys will be available or families can bring their own. There is no charge for this activity.
Red Cross Babysitters Course — This course will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 9:30-3:30 p.m. Youth between the ages of 11-15 years of age are encouraged to register. This course is limited to 12 participants and to register. The deadline is Oct. 22 and the cost is $50 per participant and youth must bring a lunch and drink to the training. Here is a great chance to learn skills, knowledge and confidence needed to take care of infants and toddlers.
Walking Times — The gym will be open for walkers starting Tuesday, Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This free activity allows individuals to walk inside throughout the fall and winter months. Days for walking are Mondays through Fridays. Participants are asked to wear sneakers or soft soled shoes in the gym.
Mens Open Gym — Starting Thursday, Oct. 11, Men’s Open gym will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 6-7:30 p.m. The cost is $4 per player. Players must be 18 years of age or older and out of high school to participate.
Youth Basketball Programs — Registration is now underway for Little Hoopsters (Kindergarteners), Tykes (Grades 1-2), and Peewees (Grades 3-4).. Registrations have been distributed throughout the local school systems or can be picked up at the Recreation Departments main office.
Little Hoopsters is designed with the youngsters in mind. It will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, Dec. 8 and Dec. 15. Children will work on fun dribbling and passing skills and on the last day will have a game for parents and family to attend. Parents may choose between the 9 a.m. or 10 a.m. time slots. Each hour is limited to 15 children. Cost for the program is $25 per child. Registration is required and the deadline is Nov. 10.
Tykes and Peewees start the week of Dec. 3. These two programs introduce basketball to youth through weekly practices and games and will run until Feb. 9. Each of these programs costs $25 for Houlton Residents and $35 for non-Houlton Residents. Registration deadline is Nov. 10.
