100 Years Ago – Oct. 2, 1918
New position — Harold Ireland, who for several years was employed at J. Watson & Co., has resigned his position and is now working for the Great Northern Paper Co. at their works near Monticello.
New business — Irving Cameron and Geo. Fleming have opened a repair shop in the basement under Gillin’s Grocery store, where they will do a general business of sheet metal, plumbing and steam fitting.
75 Years Ago – Oct. 7, 1943
Outstanding food production — The Farm Security Administration has cited George Harris and his family for “outstanding work in wartime food production.” Harris, with his wife and four children, operates a 60-acre farm on the B Road. Earl Leavitt, FSA supervisor for the part of Southern Aroostook, said the Harris family had been commended by J. H. Wood, FSA regional director, for a “fine job and the sacrifices you have made for victory, a people’s peace and a better world.” The citation was the first of its kind in the nation’s history of wartime food production. Mr. and Mrs. Harris have three sons and one daughter, the oldest being a son age 9.
50 Years Ago – Oct. 2, 1968
Service pin — Kenneth R. Thomsen, left, Customs Inspector at the Orient station, Port of Houlton, received a 20-year service pin from Port Director of Customs, G. A. Chaisson. Inspector Thomsen began his Customs career at Easton, served in Jackman and has been stationed at Orient for the past three years.
Promotion — Milliard A. Fairley, assistant to the chief engineer of the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad, has retired. He had held various posts in the railroad’s engineering department for the past 44 years. Vinal J. Welch, chief engineer, said that he will be succeeded in his post by Gordon S. Duncan, also of Houlton. Mr. Welch also announced the appointment of Leo C. Fournier as assistant superintendent of track.
25 Years Ago – Oct. 6, 1993
Celebrate anniversary — Helen and Roy Hogan celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. They were married Oct. 6, 1930, at St. Mary’s Church by Rev. Patrick Silke. The attendants of the event were Abby O’Donnell and Justin Hogan. The Hogans have six children, Betty Hutchinson, Mary McKay, Colleen Pryor, Kay Alice Crabbe, Jim Hogan, Jerry McGuire and Linda Sennett. They have 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Roy turned 90 last Jan. 10, and Helen turned 80 today. Roy was born at the Hogan homestead where he farmed. There was an open house for the family and friends honoring the occasion last Sunday.
Service award — Bradley C. Bean, administrator, presents Dana Jones with his service award plaque for nine years of service in the Respiratory Therapy Department at Houlton Regional Hospital. Dana leaves the hospital to pursue his respiratory therapy career with TLC of Houlton.
