PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The weekend was a busy one for all of the University of Maine at Presque Isle fall athletic teams, with the men’s and women’s soccer teams able to compete in home games as part of Homecoming Weekend.
Men’s soccer loses 1, ties 1
The Owls rebounded from a lopsided shutout loss to SUNY-Canton Saturday with a tie against Fisher College Sunday in matches played at Park Family Field.
The team is now 4-6-1 after an 8-0 loss to the Roos and a 1-1 draw with the Falcons. Stephen Cochrane’s goal in the 74th minute knotted the match against Fisher. Goalkeeper Caleb Thompson made both a sliding save and a diving save to preserve the tie.
UMPI is now 4-6-1 and hosts Thomas College Saturday, Oct. 6, at 2:30 p.m. and Unity College Sunday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m.
Women’s squad remains winless
The UMPI women still are seeking their first win after falling to SUNY-Canton Saturday, 2-1, and to Fisher College Sunday, 5-1.
The Owls, under interim head coach Keli Marston, now hold an 0-8 mark entering a match against Thomas College Saturday, Oct. 6, at noon. The team also will host Unity College Sunday, Oct. 7, at noon.
Hannah Nadeau opened the scoring for UMPI against SUNY-Canton and the Owls held the lead until the Roos put in goals in the 62nd and 74th minutes to prevail.
Jordi Legassie scored the Owls’ lone goal against the Falcons the following day.
Volleyball team goes 0-3
The volleyball team was shut out by Colby College, Rivier University and Gordon College, all in road matches, to fall to 7-8 on the season.
The team is at UM-Fort Kent Wednesday, Oct. 3, and then travels to Keene, New Hampshire, Saturday, Oct. 6, for a doubleheader against UMass-Dartmouth and Keene State College.
Miranda Washinawatok led the Owls in kills with three against Colby, six against Rivier and four against Gordon. Laura Aroz piled up 12 assists against Rivier.
Golfers third in Augusta tourney
Michael Boone shot a 91 and led the Owls at the UMA Invitational held Saturday. UMPI placed third, behind New Hampshire Technical Institute and the host Moose, and ahead of Southern Maine Community College.
Austin Coulston had a 108, Jordan Hanscom a 117 and Christian Mumley a 121 for UMPI. The team’s next match is Wednesday, Oct. 3, against UM-Farmington at Waterville Country Club.
XC teams compete in state meet
The UMPI men placed 11th out of 13 teams and the women were 15th out of 18 at the Maine State Championships held at Bowdoin College in Brunswick Saturday.
Nino Manzella led the men’s squad by placing 141st out of 223 runners. Kyle Davis and Andrew Hunt followed in 159th and 172nd, respectively.
For the women, Valentine Degiovanni was 107th overall out of 247 competitors. Irina Norkin showed the most improvement of all the Owls’ runners and placed 116th.
“We are on track and improving steadily,” said Owls’ coach Christopher Smith. “The hard work is paying off and our better performances are yet to come.”
The next meet is the Runnin’ Monks Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 6, at St. Joseph’s College in Standish.
