BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University Eagles capped an undefeated record in tennis with a North Atlantic Conference championship Saturday, and a local athlete played a major role.
Ashley Matlock, a freshman from Caribou, teamed with Meridith Blessard to defeat Lesley College’s Theresa Pereira and Sara Stanton in first doubles during Saturday’s finals match. Husson went on to defeat Lesley College, 5-0.
Earlier in the day, Husson bested Northern Vermont University-Lyndon in the semifinals, also by a 5-0 score. Matlock and Blessard stopped Savannah Jackson and Faibe Achinda by a score of 8-1.
Both the semifinals and finals were played at the Berkshire West Athletic Club in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
The conference title was the first ever for the Husson women’s tennis team. The Eagles finished with a 10-0 overall record. They were 6-0 in conference play.
With the win, Husson earned the opportunity to play in the NCAA Div. III Women’s Tennis Championships to be held in May 2019.
Matlock was named Rookie of the Year in the NAC last week. She was a four-year standout player at Caribou High School under coach John Habeeb. She is the daughter of Ron and Sharon Matlock of Caribou.
