VASSALBORO, Maine — Houlton’s Nick Brewer was crowned co-champion Saturday in the State Class C individual golf championship at Natanis Golf Course.
Brewer, a senior, shot a 3-over-par 75 Saturday to finished tied with Kents Hill’s Mitch Tario for the Class C title. The win comes on the heels of last weekend’s team championship for Houlton. The Shires took home the top honors with a whopping 19-stroke victory over St. Dominics at the same Natanis Golf Course on Oct. 6. Houlton fired a low score of 333 to easily distance themselves from St. Dominics’ total of 352.
For Brewer, finishing tied for first in the individual competition came as a bit of a surprise to even himself. At the team championship the weekend prior, Brewer shot an 82.
“It felt good to be in first,” he said Monday. “I didn’t realize that I could be in the lead. I didn’t even really pay attention to my score. I kinda just wrote the numbers down and didn’t think anything of it.”
But all that changed when he approached the 18th hole.
“It wasn’t until the last hole where I noticed a lot of people watching me around the green I was finishing on and I looked at my scorecard and actually counted my score and I was on track for a 75,” he said.
Brewer was not alone Saturday as fellow Shires Wyatt Harvey, Isaac Vega and Colin Moody also qualified for the individual competition. Harvey finished 10th with a 12-over-par 84; Moody tied for 12th with a 15-over-par 87; and Vega was 15th with a 20-over-par 92.
