MILLINOCKET, Maine — The playoff road came to an end for the Hodgdon boys soccer team Friday afternoon as the No. 10 Hawks pushed No. 7 Schenck/Stearns to the limit, but ultimately fell short.
Hodgdon fell 2-1 n overtime in a Class D North preliminary playoff. The Hawks end their season with a 9-5 overall record.
“It was a tough losing in sudden death overtime,” Hodgdon coach Jason Little said. “Our team played incredibly tough all year and proved to themselves that they are a strong team. Our last two games of the year ended in 1-0 and 2-1 (versus No. 1 Central Aroostook) against two of the top three teams in Class D.”
In Friday’s prelim, Isaac Adams and Jonathon Blaisdell each scored goals for the Wolverines, while Colby Hannan had an assist. For Hodgdon, Josh McGillicuddy scored a goal.
Michael Sanders made 16 saves on 31 shots for the Hawks, while Tyrone Davis had 13 saves on 17 shots for Schenck/Stearns.
“Next year we will not have a rebuilding year, but we will certainly miss out on the seniors from this year, especially on defense,” said Seth Tapley. “Offensively, we will have several underclassmen coming up through to help out.”
The Hawks will lose four seniors, who have been significant leaders for the team.
“Watching seniors play their final game is always rough, but we have told them to not hang their heads with the successful years they have had during high school,” coach Little said. “Looking at next year, we have a strong core coming back along with several new players. Even though it didn’t end the way we had wanted, our team is pleased with how we did this year. To make it to the playoffs for the third straight year is a big deal for the school and it speaks of the commitment these players have to develop as a team.”
