BELFAST, Maine — Dylan Marrero of the Caribou Vikings notched a sixth-place finish at Saturday’s Class B state championship cross country meet and qualified for the New England Championships in Manchester, New Hampshire, Nov. 10.
Marrero clocked the five-kilometer course at the Troy Howard Middle School in 16 minutes and 42.93 seconds.
“Dylan went out and ran with the leaders the entire race,” said his coach, Roy Alden. “Much of the race he was in the top three, with six runners packed up together changing spots. He has had a tremendous season.”
Teammates Kyle Boucher and Jordan Duplessie both posted their fastest times, with Boucher finishing 14th in 17:16.45 and Duplessie 17th in 17:20.61.
Ethan Holmquist was 48th, while Caleb Robbins (60th), Malachai Willey (69th) and Aaron Macek (70th) the other Viking finishers. Caribou placed sixth in the team standings and second among North schools in the Class B competition.
Presque Isle came in 11th with Trace Cyr placing 49th in 18:17.84 to lead his team. Owen McQuarrie was 65th in 18:40.7. Jacob Devine (81st), Jaron Leach (82nd) , Ezra Leach (92nd), Michael Perkins (98th) and Lauturo Visuara (100th) were other Wildcats who were part of the field.
The Caribou girls placed ninth overall and were third among teams representing the North. They were led by Ashley Violette, who was 29th in 21:17.1. Emily Austin was second for her team and 43rd overall in 21:54.71, while Katrina Salch came in 47th in 22:01.27. Kacie Haney (63rd), Olivia Austin (73rd), Maren Moir (74th) and Danielle Cyr (86th) were the Vikings’ other competitors.
Presque Isle’s Madison Jandreau had a strong individual performance by taking 19th in 20:56.2. The Wildcats were 10th as a team, right behind Caribou, with Ellie Smith (58th), Amanda Winslow (64th), Maddie Jackson (66th), Stephanie Donovan (103rd) , Jasmine LeClair (104th) and Alexandra Walsh (106th) the other Wildcat runners competing.
In Class C, Washburn was 10th and MSSM 11th in the boys race. Jay Philbrick of the Penguins led his team by placing 37th in 19:04.82 and teammate Sawyer LaChance was 41st in 19:09.26. Alexey Kovalenko (76th), Logan Madden (107th), George Johnson (109th), Michael Delorge (110th) and Qixuan Ma (111th) rounded out the list of MSSM runners.
Aidan Churchill paced the Beavers by taking 44th place in 19:14.96. Patrick Saucier ended up 75th in 20:19.84. Noah White (77th), Gavin Dunagan (85th), Jaeden Alvira (96th) and Jacob Maynard (104th) also ran for Washburn.
For Class C girls, MSSM was seventh and Fort Fairfield ninth in the team standings. Dolcie Tanguay of the Penguins logged a top-10 effort, taking 10th place in 21:24.1. Her teammate, Madison McCarthy, was right behind in 21:24.38. Deal Jialan (70th), Charlotte McCulloh (72nd) and Brice Carson (74th) rounded out the list of MSSM racers.
Jessica Halsey of Fort Fairfield came in 20th in 21:54.73 to lead her squad. Caijsa Benson (61st), Annika Reynolds (63rd), Annicka Benson (68th) and Daisey Grady (69th) were the team’s other runners.
Madison Miller of Washburn was 24th in 22:05.27 and teammate Kassandra Farley was 48th in 23:23.95.
