101 Years Ago – Nov. 8, 1917
Sale of a home farm — Mr. S. W. Hammond sold his home farm on the Caribou Back road, known as the Irving farm, to Richard Smith of Caribou. This farm comprised 233 acres, and was one of the best in its locality. In the nine years he had been farming, Mr. Hammond had made a big showing, having in that time “gotten ahead of the game” by at least $30,000. His experience was merely that of hundreds of other young and hustling Aroostook farmers.
75 Years Ago – Nov. 11, 1943
National War effort — Maine had contributed approximately $183,487,150 to the National War effort for the twelve months period ended Oct. 1, the Maine War Finance Committee announced. This amount included the sums subscribed in the three War Loan campaigns together with the sale of War Savings Stamps and E, F and G bonds between drives. It did not, however, take into account any special mercial banks between campaigns.
Hussey re-elected — The following were elected members of the executive committee at the annual Farm Bureau meeting held in Presque Isle: president, Frank Hussey, Presque Isle; vice president, Wallace K. Fenlason, Limestone; secretary, Glen Porter, Monticello; treasurer, Earl Craig, State Road; agricultural economics, Herbert Easler, Washburn; clothing, Mrs. Perley Harmon, Perham; clubs, Mrs. Nathan Lewin, Perham; crops, Ralph Rush, Benedicta.
50 Years Ago – Oct. 30, 1968
Community betterment — Nominating and publicity committees were named for the Presque Isle Community Betterment project during a second organizational meeting. Nathan Grass, chairman of the temporary committee, pointed out that the program had good potential for involving local citizens in the community by evaluating certain areas and establishing priorities for action projects. The group appointed Thomas Sweetser and Dr. Clifford O.T. Wieden to the publicity committee and Burt Thompkins, Burtt Brown and Larry Goldsmith to the nominating committee.
25 Years Ago – Nov. 10, 1993
Special honor — Caroline Gentile, associate professor at the University of Maine at Presque Isle and president of the Presque Isle Business and Professional Women’s Club, presented Marilyn Clark, the director of the Mark and Emily Turner Memorial Library, with an award for service and leadership during National Business Women’s Week.
Recognized — The Aroostook County Board of Realtors named Brenda Ann Dow of Key Realty as their “Realtor of the Year,” a designation honoring a board member for enterest, professionalism and support of the real estate industry. Dow was honored in October at the Maine Association of Realtors convention in Rockport. She served as secretary/treasurer and education chairperson for the local unit, as as vice president, as well as being a member of the Presque Isle Rotary Club, the Aroostook Unit of the American Cancer Society Board, team leader for the annual Aroostook Medical Center fund drive and served in various positions at the State Road Advent Christian Church.
