FRED A. BITHER JR., PORTLAND – Fred A. Bither Jr., age 100, of Portland, passed away on November 4, 2018, surrounded by loved ones. Fred was born in Linneus, Maine, on February 23, 1918, to Fred, Sr., and Gertrude Moir Bither. After graduating from Houlton High School in 1935, he attended Ricker College, as well as Bryant College, from which he graduated in 1939. Fred served in the U.S. Army for four years; his tours of duty included the D-Day invasion in Europe and five other campaigns. He received several American medals, as well as the Croix de Guerre from France.
In 1942, Fred married Tressa A. Green, who predeceased him in 1977. In 1980, he married Marion Garroway Bither, who predeceased him in 2013.
After the war, Fred worked for the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad in Houlton and Bangor, followed by working for the Maine Central Railroad in Portland until retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Houlton Lions Club, Elks Club and a four-star Mason belonging to the Monument Lodge No. 96.
He attended the Tuttle Road United Methodist Church and was a member of the John Wesley Society.
