Local girl putting in time for tennis

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — A Presque Isle girl is taking her tennis seriously enough to get up early on school days to train regularly with her father at the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Gentile Hall gymnasium.

Alice Korzekwa, a fourth-grade student at Zippel Elementary School, practices using a portable net with her father, Luke, for sessions held either on weekday mornings or on weekends.

She recently returned from a United States Tennis Association Youth Progression Tournament in Wayland, Massachusetts.

Korzekwa has been playing the sport since she was a 3-year-old living in Brunswick. She and her family relocated to Aroostook County five years ago and she has continued training and plans to keep competing in tourneys downstate and out of state.

Korzekwa was the only player from Maine participating in the 10U (10 years old and under) division at the Nov. 3 USTA event and competed against players from New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

She fell in all three matches, but is working hard to prepare for upcoming tournaments in Portland in March and back in Wayland, Massachusetts, in May.
