Houlton councilors begin interviewing candidates for town manager post

HOULTON, Maine — Town officials have begun reviewing the applications and scheduling interviews to find a new town manager.

Interim Town Manager Cathy O’Leary said Tuesday that the town has received 21 applications for the position and had planned to interview some candidates Tuesday evening, but had to postpone them due to the snowfall.

She said they would be rescheduled. There is no timetable set for making a selection.

The interviews between the candidates and town councilors were previously put off until after the November elections to fill two open seats on the Council

The search for a replacement for former Town Manager William D. MacDonald began shortly after he resigned suddenly on Sept. 4 after less than nine months on the job. MacDonald and town officials did not publicly reveal a reason for the resignation.

MacDonald was unanimously approved as Houlton’s town manager during a special council meeting on Nov. 6, 2017, and he began work on Nov. 28 that year. He replaced Butch Asselin, who left the post after three years to pursue a similar job in Oxford. Asselin also served as Houlton’s police chief for seven years.

Councilors appointed O’Leary to serve as interim town manager, a title she has held numerous times in the past.
